Position Summary

The Academic Classroom Technology Specialist works with UWL faculty, staff and students and is responsible for, but not limited to, design, install, configure, repair, maintenance and support for classroom and presentation (AV) technologies, video-teleconference, distance education, and lecture capture/recording in all UWLlearning spaces. The position provides onsite support for the technology podiums; responding to support requests, checking functionality of the technology as needed, and ensuring equipment is in working order. The Academic Classroom Technology Specialist works alongside other ITS staff with planning, installation, integration, and security of room technologies and related hardware components in a manner that is timely and consistent with best practices, and provides secure and safe end-user access. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Technology Services.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technology related field from an accredited 4-year College or University (or seven years of field related experience in lieu of degree). 

  • At least 2 years of experience in Information technology/educational technology media support.

  • Knowledge of classroom presentation (AV) technologies and related peripheral technologies experience/skills using, supporting and/or integrating (AV) media presentation technologies, including but not limited to file transfer, production, or distribution of digital media files and resources.  

  • Experience using, supporting, and integrating both analog and digital A/V signals presentation technologies. 

  • Ability to perform hardware set up and troubleshoot AV technologies and computers.  

  • Basic understanding of network systems. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and MAC operating systems. 

  • Experience with control systems.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience working in higher education is a plus.

  • Experience using Crestron and Extron programming design, development and deployment.

Physical Demands
  • Hands-on installation requires the ability to climb ladders; bend down and reach inside technology podiums; lift components weighing up to 35 lbs.
Working conditions and environment
  • Occasional evening and weekend technical setup/support may be required.

Responsibility Statement Classroom technology support
Duties to Support Responsibility
  • Installation, integration, and securing of presentation technology in campus learning spaces. 

  • Install, configure repair, maintenance, and support campus technology classrooms. Work with other IT staff in the installation, integration, security, support and functional assurance of classroom presentation technology. Work to ensure a consistent standard is maintained throughout the university’s centrally managed technology classrooms.  

  • Work with other classroom support staff providing site support for the technology podiums; responding to support and repair requests, checking functionality and security of the technology as needed and ensuring equipment is in working order. Assess any reported or discovered operational problems, take corrective service measures or refer the issue to other appropriate ITS staff. 

  • Maintain equipment inventory and supply records. Assist with developing, distributing, maintaining clear podium and technology room documentation. 

  • Provide expert consultation for technology solutions; research, test and recommend emerging and/or upgraded technology solutions. 

  • Replace consumable supplies in technology classrooms as needed.

  • Provide research, recommendations and solutions for upgrades, budget and/or procurement. 

  • Assist with university’s electronics recycling program. 

  • Train End Users in the operation and usage of classroom technology. 

  • Participate and/or assist in instructional technology activities and events developed by ITS for faculty and staff. 

  • Work with network services, vendors, installers, and campus facilities in classroom renovation regarding classroom technology needs.
