The UMBC Center for Cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary university center that unifies UMBC’s many cybersecurity initiatives and capabilities. The Center provides both Maryland and the Nation with academic and research leadership, collaboration, innovation and outreach in this critical discipline by aligning our institution’s academic, research, workforce development and technology incubation activities to advance UMBC’s position as a leading research university in cybersecurity-related disciplines.

The UMBC Center for Cybersecurity has over 30 affiliated faculty members from a broad range of academic disciplines including computer science & electrical engineering, information systems, mathematics & statistics, physics, economics and public policy (see https://cybersecurity.umbc.edu).

UCYBR-affiliated faculty lead several major external partnerships in cybersecurity, including academic leadership of the National Cybersecurity FFRDC in collaboration with MITRE and a national community of academic institutions in support of NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence.  Other prominent cyber initiatives include a highly active research partnership with the U.S. Naval Academy; operation of the Accelerated Cognitive Cybersecurity Lab (supported by IBM); the National Science Foundation Scholarship for Service (SFS) program; the UMBC Cyber Scholars Program, which prepares the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, supported by Northrop Grumman, and a thriving small-business incubator for cybersecurity companies within the bwtech@UMBC Research & Technology Park.  UMBC has active international cybersecurity collaborations with institutions in India, Israel, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Responsibilities:

Specific duties for the incumbent include, but are not limited to: strategic planning and active business development to expand UMBC’s collaborative cybersecurity partnerships with public and private organizations; development of external funding proposals to grow and sustain a robust cybersecurity-oriented research and education portfolio; and developing activities to enhance the visibility of UMBC’s broad set of cybersecurity initiatives. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Master's degree and a minimum of fifteen years of experience in cybersecurity organizations with increasing leadership responsibilities up to and possibly including senior executive and/or flag-officer levels.

Preferred Qualifications:  Desirable candidates will be widely known and respected within the government and commercial cybersecurity community, have a proven track record of working within joint academic-industry environments, have prior experience in developing and securing external contracts/support, and can effectively articulate UMBC’s strengths in cybersecurity as related to research, education, and entrepreneurship.
