Emerson Preparatory School (Emerson) is an independent high school located in the Thurgood Marshall Center, within the vibrant Logan Circle/U Street Corridor of Washington, DC (see our Website at www.emersonprep.org).  We are a small, inclusive high school with a focus on personal education.  Emerson serves grades 9-12 in small classes, averaging seven students per instructor - something we deem vital to being able to effectively engage students.

 

POSITION

  • Emerson is seeking a charismatic and knowledgeable teacher to bring an introduction to Coding and Digital Media to our small, innovative high school.  

  • With classes of no more than 5-10 students, teachers at Emerson really have a chance to connect and work with their students.

  • We run four 80min class periods each semester, and begin the school day at 8:45am.

  • This position is to teach a 1st Period course during the Fall, and another class during the Spring.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates value the opportunity to work individually with students, have a knack for generating excitement about learning, can develop lesson plans that inspire student discussion and interaction, and possess strong mentoring skills.  The ability to teach across different disciplines is advantageous.  Bachelor’s degree required.  Content concentration or advanced degree in Secondary Education preferred.  Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must reside in the greater DC area.

 

PREFERED EXPERIENCE, CREDENTIALS, AND SKILLS FOR CANDIDATES:

  • Two or more years of classroom teaching experience in secondary education in an urban setting, inclusive classroom and/or co-teaching experience.

  • Familiarity and experience with using and teaching the use of educational technology for math instruction and practice.

  • Experience working with youth with high social emotional needs.

  • Cultural competency in working with students and families from different racial, ethnic, linguistic, and sexual orientation backgrounds.

  • Ability to connect with families/caregivers.

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills for understanding and interpreting data to inform instruction and other practices.

  • Confident verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, and ability to prioritize, delegate, manage time and tasks so as to consistently meet deadlines.

  • Proven track record working collaboratively with a team.
