Position Information

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Security, Computer Science, Network Communications, or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certification and/or experience.

Certification: Certifications such as CCNA, operating systems (OS), or security focused.

Experience:
Three years experience in a production security, Cisco network, or general IT environment.

Knowledge of: 

  • Best practices for network and information security.

  • Vulnerability assessment, forensics, and network security audits.

  • Data, voice, video, and specialty protocols, networks, and systems.

  • Change implementation, installation, and operation of network security systems.

  • Network security systems, such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems.

  • Network operational management and security considerations, including tools such as SNMP, Syslog, Splunk, and network monitoring systems.

  • Command line and scripting skills, such as Linux, Windows, Splunk, and security appliances.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. 

  • Ability to work independently as a contributing team member and routinely update director on results.  

  • Ability to contribute to group projects and work collaboratively as a member of a strong technical team. 

  • Ability to travel once or twice a year for education, professional development, or conferences.

  • Ability to perform light lifting as appropriate for equipment installations and maintenance. 

  • Flexibility in work schedule; willingness to occasionally adjust work hours on Wednesdays between midnight and 8 A.M. for the maintenance window. No weekends except in emergencies; no on-call rotation.

  • Must live in the area; this is not a remote work position. Writing sample should include a document you have created for anything related to this line of work.

Desired Qualifications

Security+, GIAC Security essentials,  CISSP or similar security certification.
Masters degree with security emphasis.
Some experience with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and other compliance standards as applicable to network and systems security implementations.

Position Purpose

University Technology Services, the central IT organization of Oakland University, is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer for a security generalist position. We are looking for a skilled enthusiast interested in joining our security team, reporting to the Information Security Officer.

Your work will include providing detailed technical analyses of security systems and architecture enhancements, performing upgrades, responding to issues and events, and implementing new solutions. Responsibilities include managing firewalls, Intrusion Detection / Prevention systems (IDS/IPS), Security Information Event Management (SIEM), and the security aspects of Identity Management.

Projects are enterprise-wide and supportive of both academic and administrative operational organizations.
