Unit Job Summary
The Data Systems Analyst (DSA) position is comprised of four separate but related responsibilities, including:

-acting as an internal consultant to ensure that the Schools' data systems meet the institution's current and evolving operational and instructional needs.

-managing designated school database systems, including the Student Information System and the Follet Library System

-assisting the System Administrator with managing school server hardware and software

-writing scripts and programs to increase the effectiveness of school data systems

Regular Areas of Responsibility include:

Managing school databases:

-serve as primary contact for management of Student Information System; collaborates with the Office of the Registrar to manage routine SIS functions; collaborates with school offices to implement progress reporting protocols; manages user accounts; creates special-purpose reports as requested by end users; creates user documentation and trains end users as needed; troubleshoots Level 1 and 2 incidents with assistance from the Registrar, escalates Level 3 incidents to SIS vendor; collaborates with System Administrator to ensure optimal hardware and server OS performance; collaborate with hardware support staff and end users to ensure timely updates of database versions

-serve as primary contact for management of Follett Library database; collaborates with Librarians to manage routine library database tasks and special projects; escalates Level 2 and 3 incidents to Follett Support

-coordinate data collection and management efforts across school offices and user groups, including the Back to Lab process; oversees data transfers between/among Lab and UC data systems

-write scripts and programs to improve overall performance and functionality of school data systems, including databases, servers, and tech support protocols

Performing data analyst duties:

-perform regular audits of school data systems, mapping outcomes to institutional goals, and assessing strengths and opportunities for improvement

-seek opportunities to improve systems interoperability

-Identify and evaluate alternatives to current systems as requested by the Director of Information Technology

Providing assistance to the System Administrator:

-participate in devising, implementing, and reviewing identity management protocols as needed

-perform System Administrator duties when System Administrator is unavailable

-assist System Administrator as needed to address Level 2 and 3 troubleshooting incidents

-assist System Administrator in ensuring timely, reliable backups

-assist the System Administrator with evaluation, development, testing, and initial implementation of new server-based resources

 
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Two years of undergraduate coursework in any subject required.

Master's degree in Computer science preferred.

 
Experience
Two years of programming experience required.
Minimum of two years in an educational computing environment, including database management and support, server administration, data systems support, and complex web programming tasks required.

Thorough understanding of switched Ethernet and wireless networking required

Fluent in use of: JavaScript, SQL, PHP, Apache, HTML, Apache, LDAP, common e-mail clients, IMAP, iOS, Linux, VMWare, Windows server hardware and software, Microsoft Office required.

Experience with the following preferred:
Java, Apple Remote Desktop, Workgroup Manager, common Apple desktop applications, common web authoring tools FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Access

 
Competencies
Considerable proficiency in desktop computer software use in both Windows and Macintosh environments required.
Knowledge of configuration and management of clusters required.
Knowledge of backup technology and other monitoring and automated systems management technologies required.
Knowledge of system administration issues in a large and complex client server environment required.
Familiarity with integration and management issues in a heterogeneous computing environment required.
Technical knowledge of current software protocols and Internet standards required.
Outstanding deductive and investigative skills to identify and diagnose complex, non-intuitive technical problems required.
Ability to learn new procedures, techniques, and approaches quickly required.
Integrity and credibility to work with sensitive data required.

Knowledge of the department's primary business function preferred.
