Reporting to the Chief Information Officer and Associate Vice President for Technology Services, the Deputy Chief Information Officer for Client Support and Educational Technology Services (Deputy CIO) provides strategic leadership and tactical oversight to numerous disciplines of campus-wide technology as part of the overall Technology Services (TS) unit.  These campus-wide service areas include user support; desktop computing hardware and software support; educational technology; print and copy services; classroom, event and media support; service desk support; lab and classroom hardware and software (including virtualized desktop interface); and educational software (including the campus learning management system and more).  

As a member of the CIO's staff, the Deputy CIO participates in executive-level decisions and development of strategies and budgets to achieve the objectives and goals of TS to best support the mission of the university. They are responsible for setting goals and devising means and methods to align their divisions’ work with the departmental and university’s strategic goals.  They are responsible additionally for reviewing and approving invoices and working closely with vendors on testing, evaluation, and acquiring new technologies in support of the educational mission. The Deputy CIO communicates information and represents the TS department in various meetings, committee assignments, and higher education and IT conferences as needed. The Deputy CIO must have in-depth knowledge of budgets, IT strategies, policies, IT security, project management, and must have demonstrated a strong customer service orientation.

The Deputy CIO oversees and coordinates TS staff establishing expectations, goals, and timelines to meet departmental mission.  They meet with members of the campus community, particularly faculty and student bodies to help inform TS of campus needs and to outwardly share and communicate decisions and strategy. They will collaborate with their colleagues within TS and other campus stakeholders on the development of specific project plans and timelines; monitor and report on progress; and develop and build teams within and across groups. They will meet with faculty and staff on IT programs and projects, prepares analyses and reports, and makes presentations to constituent groups, stakeholders and advisory committees as needed. In consultation with the CIO, the Deputy CIO sets policies and procedures for carrying out projects and assigned work.

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage services of nearly 20 full-time staff, external consultants and 30+ part-time student staff to provide all service desk support, desktop computing, educational technology, print and copy services, and media and event support services campus-wide; 

  • Liaise with university academic and administrative groups to collaborate on institutional change involving technology; 

  • Establish a very high standard of service and support both as a representative to our campus constituents and also as a steward of our students’ resources

  • Convey the strategy, mission, and goals of the department and the institution to the staff that work within the department and set an example of dedication to the mission

  • Provide recommendations and decision-making to executive leaders, including CIO, Deans, Vice Presidents and other decision-making entities;

  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, providing leadership and operational support to incorporate educational technologies and new content delivery methods into curriculum;

  • Research and implement new technologies to serve the university’s emerging student, faculty and staff needs, including the rendering of services related to computing and pedagogy;

  • Responsible for development and ongoing oversight of training, consultation, and workshops for faculty, staff and students on a variety of supported software and hardware;

  • Responsible for development and training for Client Services and Educational Technology Staff to ensure growth opportunities for employees and a potential pipeline for mobility;

  • Oversee the production of documentation for students, faculty, and staff regarding use of technology resources at the university;

  • Maintain currency and follow regulatory guidelines (FERPA, HIPPA, etc.) for privacy/security;

  • Oversee and set standards for the divisions responsible for operational computing services and staff in the university, including installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all of the university's desktop computing systems.  This includes setting standards for customer service, establishing service desk and media protocols and standards, allocating workloads amongst the team, and aligning work to departmental and institutional goals;

  • Oversight responsibility for administrative and policy tasks, as well as strategic planning related to the acquisition and distribution of computing equipment.  This includes the development of a lifecycle management plan, detailed budgets and replacement schedules, and a computing structure capable of supporting multiple types of end-user environments ranging from small, low-power devices, up to high power computing; 

  • Overall responsibility for development and daily maintenance of the campus learning management system (Moodle and Canvas), campus e-portfolio system, campus collaboration platform (Google and Sharepoint), and the campus print management system (Papercut);

  • Act as a public relations representative regarding computing resources, services, and opportunities available to faculty, students and staff campus-wide, including public speaking engagements and presentations at various university gatherings and national conferences;

  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications: 

  • This position requires a 4-year degree from an accredited institution of higher education.  

  • This position requires demonstrated evidence of successful and increasingly complex leadership, management and budget experience with five years’ minimum experience in higher education technology management.  

  • This position requires an incumbent with a demonstrated ability to successfully develop and maintain a very high level of service within a diverse team, including hiring, supervision, mentoring, performance review and disciplinary actions, as needed.

  • Experience with a wide range of current technologies, architectures, and project management methodologies.

  • Experience managing a service and/or media desk including understanding of lifecycle management, inventory management, and event support.

  • Experience coaching and mentoring employees and colleagues.

  • Experience managing a team that includes direct reports, indirect reports, and hired consultants. 

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets across multiple accounts. 

  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.

  • Excellent communication skills.

Highly Desired:

  • Experience teaching at least one regularly offered course within a higher education environment is highly preferred.

  • Evidence of successful professional presentations at national higher education related conferences.

  • Experience with principles, practices, methods, and techniques applicable to long-range and strategic technology planning.

  • Experience with analytics and Business Intelligence toolsets including Tableau.

  • Continued education with a focus on leadership development.

  • Direct, hands-on administration experience with Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) or other LMS tools.
