Reporting to the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO), the Deputy CIO is responsible for overseeing IT-related initiatives that strengthen campus-wide IT services while enabling the University to operate more efficiently. The Deputy CIO provides leadership in all areas of IT management and operations and ensures OIT organizational effectiveness. Key responsibilities include serving as the organizational lead in the areas of IT strategic direction, organizational effectiveness, contract and vendor management, administration and finance and department-wide communications. The Deputy CIO is also responsible for developing external relationships, as appropriate, to identify and keep abreast of emerging trends and opportunities in IT.

 

The Deputy CIO supervises a team of highly motivated IT professionals, is a member of the CIO Senior Staff, and serves on a variety of University-level committees representing OIT. The Deputy CIO represents the Vice President and CIO in his absence and also functions as the organization’s chief of staff.

Responsibilities

Provide organizational vision, advising, and strategic planning

  • Advises the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.

  • Works to develop organizational vision and IT strategic and operational plans, aligning IT priorities and actions in support of University-wide goals.

  • Understands how IT decisions impact University operations and develops strategies for communicating these decisions and achieving desired results.

  • Functions as chief of staff with decision making authority.

  • Oversees and provides guidance on numerous OIT cross-department initiatives to ensure collaboration, financial planning, and project delivery.

  • Advises,  offers guidance, and provides organizational perspective to OIT Associate CIOs with their departmental planning efforts, escalating and remediating issues when needed.

  • Develops, maintains, and communicates processes for valuing IT services and works with IT service providers/vendors to enhance services based on user evaluations and other quality measures.

  • Proposes, develops, and enhances IT-related initiatives that will strengthen campus-wide IT services, while helping the University operate more efficiently.

Manage Operations and Planning operational functions

  • Provides direct management oversight to the following OIT functions: organizational effectiveness,  strategic communications, budget and finance, IT learning and development, vendor and contract management, and overall financial planning and administration of OIT.

  • Provides direct oversight over staffing changes and requests, ensuring resources are justified and best aligned with services that advance organizational goals in support of University needs.

  • Provides direct oversight, financial strategy and accountability for the organization’s operational budget, and encourages OIT leadership to identify opportunities for cost savings as a practice.

Strategic Advisory Group leadership and budget planning

  • Staffs the Strategic Advisory Group on IT (SAGIT), working closely with the Provost, Executive Vice President, Dean of Faculty and Treasurer, anticipating future IT needs (over multiple years) and assisting in the allocation and management of the University’s information systems IT Annual Fund and IT Capital Fund totaling over $14 million dollars.

  • Manages the yearly Provost Budget Request and Priority Committee (PriCom) processes for OIT.

Represent OIT in University and external collaborations

  • Coordinates a variety of OIT cross-functional teams enabling continuous improvement, guiding the identification of goals and objectives, and monitoring progress toward deliverables.

  • Establishes, enhances, and maintains effective relationships and communication with all University constituents. Establishes communication channels and other resolution mechanisms to maximize desired results and minimize any potential conflict.

  • Has a deep understanding of operations and service delivery across University business areas and represents OIT on a variety of University-wide committees.

  • Consults with external technology experts to identify emerging IT trends and opportunities and evaluates them within the context of Princeton’s and OIT’s IT strategic direction.

  • Fosters relationships with regional and national IT associations, such as EDUCAUSE and NJEdge, and other institutions of higher education.

Senior Staff leadership

  • Manages the weekly OIT Senior Staff meetings and chairs the meeting in the absence of the VP and CIO.

 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 20 years of extensive IT management experience within a University setting.

  • A dynamic leader with excellent interpersonal and analytical skills, who values, and excels at, collaboration, identifying opportunities, creative problem solving and customer service.

  • A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of IT management with direct operations experience at an institution of higher education. 

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, 

  • Ability to work effectively at all levels of the organization and influence others to progress toward a common vision or goal.

  • In-depth knowledge of, and familiarity with, IT products and services.

  • A thorough understanding of IT in higher education with the ability to understand, communicate and advise on the potential outcome of critical decisions.

  • A commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse University community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • IT management and operations experience at an institution similar to Princeton University a plus

Education

Bachelor's degree is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
