St. Luke’s School, a secular, college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks a teacher to join its innovative designLab.  Launched in 2015, the designLab consists of spaces for experimentation (including a brand new, state of the art, 4000+ sq ft digital and physical fabrication space set to open in September 2018), an engineering and computer science curriculum, and the home for design thinking at St. Luke’s School.  Through course offerings such as Programming, Robotics, and Mechanical Design, and through signature student experiences such as the Hackathon, the designLab seeks to develop students’ creative problem solving abilities through engineering, computer science, and design thinking.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure a safe, actively monitored, and well-maintained fabrication lab.
  • Develop intellectual resources and provide fabrication support for student-facing and adult-facing experiences such as a multi-week designLab summer program, the St. Luke’s Hackathon, Open Maker Nights, and others.
  • Increase programming - both during and outside of the school day/year - that helps the designLab connect with more Makers, especially under-represented populations and those students who have not yet identified as Makers.
  • Build departmental relationships that yield more interdisciplinary and project-based learning.
  • Provide ad-hoc teaching support for ‘overflow’ courses, depending on interest and enrollment.
  • Serve as co-advisor for a group of 6 to 8 students.
  • Assist with supervisory duties, such as study hall proctoring, lunchroom supervision, and chaperoning events.

A combination of challenging academics and truly exceptional community support distinguishes St. Luke’s and encourages our students to go above and beyond their own expectations.
