The College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for the Director of Information Technology.  The Director will provide leadership and oversight for the information technology services for all areas within the College of Applied Health Sciences. This position is directly responsible for coordination of all information technology services related to network operations, desktop support, server and database administration, labs, classroom, meeting rooms, application development, communications devices and research support for the College of Applied Health Sciences.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

 

Information Technology Oversight

  • Evaluate the adequacy of current IT systems, services, and staffing with respect to the teaching, research, and public engagement missions of the College.

  • Work closely with AHS Communications staff to ensure that College web-based services are adequately supported and maintained.

  • Lead and manage the staff in AHS IT Services, including setting expectations for departmental and individual goals.

  • Direct complex projects related to new information technology applications and services.

  • Manage the training, professional development, and management of work assigned to professional and technical support staff.

  • Determine IT Section funding needs, determine appropriate expenditures and provide reports for administrative review.

Leadership/Governance

  • Work closely with the Dean, Associate Deans, Department Heads, and College faculty, staff, and students to align IT services with the mission and strategic goals of the College. Direct and continuously adjust organizational resources accordingly.

  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the College of AHS IT Governance Committee.

  • Act as a representative for the College to the rest of the campus on IT matters, including serving on the IT Council and participating in other campus IT Governance committees.

  • Serve as College HIPPA liaison in accordance with University HIPPA Privacy & Security Compliance policies; work with AHS HIPPA covered components to ensure HIPPA compliance; serve as HIPPA subject matter expert; coordinate HIPPA data investigations, audits, and regulatory responses; in conjunction with the Privacy and Security Officials and other campus officials, coordinate and lead AHS HIPPA policy development, implementation, and breach effort responses.

  • Serve as College Security liaison on the Campus Security Committee; work with Technology Services to coordinate data investigations, audits, and regulatory responses; in conjunction with the Privacy and Security Officials and other campus officials, coordinate and lead AHS Security policy development, implementation, and breach effort responses. Maintain cooperative relations between the College and other IT leaders on campus including Technology Services.

STRATEGIC PLANNING:

  • Provide leadership in designing and implementing an overall IT services strategy for the College of AHS in partnership with the College IT Governance Committee. Consider outsourcing and campus shared service options when developing the College IT services strategy.

  • Supervise the recruitment, development, retention, and organization of all AHS IT staff.

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for information technology applications and services for the unit.

  • Develop and implement administrative and operational policies and procedures.

 

EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor’s degree

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 years of IT department management experience.

  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and understanding of information technology best practices.

  • Broad understanding of the higher education networking environment and network administration toolsets.

  • Expertise in both Windows and Mac operating systems, and the ability to research and become knowledgeable about open source software, cloud-based computing, and other emerging trends in social media or other cutting-edge IT developments that may be relevant to research needs in the College.

  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and presentation on a variety of subjects to all audiences: management, peers, subordinates, users.

  • Proven record of success hiring, developing, and managing professional staff to achieve their potential.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing priorities, including effective delegation skills.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Proven record of customer service excellence.

  • Ability and desire to create, and work in, a collaborative team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 years of IT Project Management experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the higher education environment, including support for teaching, research, and outreach activities.

  • Awareness of IT trends in areas such as server/desktop virtualization, endpoint management, storage provisioning, web services, and database administration.

  • Demonstrated capacity for advanced strategic thinking across the full breadth of IT services, preferably in the higher education environment.

  • Advanced business analysis, project management, and/or planning skills.

 

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION: 

The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.  This is a full-time, 12-month, academic professional position.  The start date is as soon as possible after closing.
