Director of Technical Services
Under limited supervision, this position provides leadership and direction for all aspects of technical services including acquisitions, cataloging, serials, database and electronic resource management, metadata creation for the Library’s digital collections, and library materials resource budget management. Responsible for providing library resources to library patrons, faculty, staff and administrators in support of an intellectual climate for academic growth.
Minimum Education:
- ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science required.
Minimum Experience/Training:
- Minimum four years of successful and increasingly responsible professional level experience working in technical services.
- Minimum three years of management/supervisory experience.
- Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in integrated library systems (Ex Libris), and other library related technologies
Demonstrated ability to build or improve workflows or data maintenance tasks using automated
tools and processes.
Experience in academic libraries or understanding of issues in higher education.
Reading, writing, or speaking skills in a second language.
Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Familiarity with best practices and standards for digital collections metadata.
Essential Functions:

Daily -30%: Provides leadership and oversight for the Technical Services department which includes responsibility for acquisition, cataloging and metadata production, serials, bindery, digital collections, licensing, and e-resource management.

Daily -30%: Supervises and mentors Technical Services staff to ensure the effective organization of departmental workflows. Supervision includes the recommendation of staffing, hiring, termination and discipline. Setting performance standards and evaluating staff, and staff development. Provides training opportunities to keep staff up to date on current and future cataloging formats and standards.

Daily -10%: Oversees the cataloging of new materials for the library collection, with responsibility for complex and original cataloging in all formats. Reviews and troubleshoots metadata and cataloging issues. Responds to inquiries and resolves problems related to bibliographic records and procedures. Monitors changes in cataloging standards and refines policies and procedures, as needed. Provides cataloging support for special projects as needed.

Daily -5%: Manages bibliographic databases, including development and maintenance of local authority files and holdings deletions in both the integrated library system (ILS) and OCLC databases. Maintains quality control of cataloging through regular review of staff work.

Daily -5%: Monitors BC and FAU department library resource expenditures. Maintains library materials budget records and appropriate statistics. Supplies budgetary information and generates library collection and financial data from the ILS; provides statistical reports, library materials budget reports, and collection reports, as assigned. Collaborates with the Associate Dean, Library Access and Discovery on matters concerning the library materials budget.

Monthly- 5%: Develops departmental policies and procedures. Works with staff to establish goals and objectives for the Department. Evaluates, prioritizes, and coordinates special projects with department staff.

Monthly- 5%: Serves on Collection Development Committee, national, state, and local committees or projects. Participates actively in appropriate professional societies and report on outcomes and work processes developed at occasional professional conferences. Remains current with metadata and cataloging standards and digital library development.

Monthly- 5%: Fosters and maintains effective working relationships with vendors for ongoing maintenance, development, and support concerning features and functions the library requires maintaining or enhance service.

Monthly- 5%: Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

In depth knowledge of cataloging and metadata schemas and standards, such as RDA, AACR2, LCSH, MARC, OCLC, EAD, MODS, and Dublin Core.

Knowledge of current practice, trends, and standards in all operations of technical services.

Knowledge of automated library management systems (Ex Libris).
