The Director of Technology will provide technical leadership and thought partnership to the Julia Lane Data Initiative, with a specific focus on Professor Lane’s work as part of the Coleridge Initiative. The Coleridge Initiative’s goal is to change the empirical foundation of social science, statistical, and public agencies in the United States, and transform understanding of how our society works. The Director will lead and oversee technical project work that will ensure the effective provision of technical infrastructure, system architecture, deployment, scaling, and maintenance for the Initiative in order to fulfill its strategic objectives. Under the guidance of Professor Lane, the Director will also partner with the management team of the Initiative on related strategic planning. The Director’s responsibilities will include (a) designing, creating, and rolling out Initiative secure, data storage, integration, and analysis infrastructure for government agencies and a large number of researchers; (b) overseeing all system design and changes in system architecture; (c) leading project teams to accomplish new initiatives; (d) serving as Initiative senior team member in the development and implementation of technological solutions to meet Initiative goals and objectives; (e) developing and supervising staff; (f) communicating technology strategy to partners, clients, potential clients, the broader administrative data research community, and investors; and (g) keeping current with industry trends in all aspects of technologies.

 

Julia Lane's portfolio of work, based at NYU Wagner, has the collective goal of using data to transform the way governments access and use data for the social good.  Her center is a fast-growing, University-based startup that has already created dozens of pilot projects, worked with over 100 agencies – federal, state and local - and trained over 250 individuals. The JLDI’s team leaders have designed and implemented training, research projects, and a secure data facility; all of these activities are attracting national and international attention.

 

**This is a 12 month fixed-term position with the possibility of ongoing renewal.**

Qualifications

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.

Preferred Education:
Master’s degree in Business Administration or other relevant degree.

Required Experience:
10+ years of professional level experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must include prior experience in a CTO or technology leadership role, with complex systems and system integration, budgeting and business planning, and 5+ years of related software experience. Must include experience managing project teams in support of defined goals and objectives.

Preferred Experience:
Experience in a higher education institution and/or a government agency.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent organizational, analytical, problem solving and verbal/written communication skills. Familiarity with secure cloud-based computing platforms, programs and policies. Demonstrated ability to provide Project Management skills in a wide variety of technical projects. Ability to communicate with different audiences and convey technical information to a non-technical audience. Experience collaborating on projects with various stakeholders and functioning as the technical lead. Proven ability to manage multiple assignments and keep track of tasks and project status to meet deadlines. Ability to convert high level instructions to detailed implementation plan and task list. Ability to prioritize multiple urgent requests. Knowledge of a variety of current and emerging technologies.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Proficiency with MS Office suite, particularly Excel. Database management experience.
