Landon School, an independent day school for boys (grades 3–12) in Bethesda, Maryland, seeks a Part-Time Graphic Designer to begin immediately. The Graphic Designer will creatively nurture, manage and ensure that the Landon community has a consistent and thoughtful approach to our visual identity. He or she can take direction from written or spoken ideas and convert them seamlessly into eye-catching and effective publicity materials for the school. The ideal applicant works simultaneously and effectively on multiple projects and has extensive experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Applicants who have a degree or certificate in graphic design and have experience with photography and video will receive prime consideration. This position is 15–20 hours a week and reports to the Director of Communications.

Responsibilities

  • Create flyers, invitations, infographics, signage, event programs and other visual publicity materials for the school.
  • Work collaboratively with academic, arts, athletics, admissions and development departments, as well as teachers, students and parents, to understand scope of projects and create cohesive designs that reflect our culture and goals.
  • Manage, review and update the school’s visual identity program, including logos, colors and fonts.
  • Work with outside designers, consultants and/or vendors on major initiatives, publications and events, such as our school strategic plan, magazine and Azalea Festival.
  • Work closely with our print companies to manage all aspects of the process — from submission to proof — for a wide range of projects, ranging from fence banners to offset-printed books and magazines.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn Content Management Systems, such as Finalsite or Blackbaud.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products, including Word and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communications skills that involve the ability to listen to a client’s needs, understand who they are trying to reach, and advise on effective strategies to accomplish that goal, as well as explain, promote and defend an artistic vision for the project.
  • Creative mind that effectively makes complex ideas more accessible and constantly generates new ideas or new twists on old concepts.
  • Team player who has the ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism as well as deal diplomatically and comfortably with a diverse community of teachers, administrators, parents, alumni and students, among others.
  • Outstanding time management skills that allow for simultaneous work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines set by the Director of Communications and others.
  • Passion for accuracy and detail.
  • A valid driver’s license.
