Today, as one of the most comprehensive and acclaimed institutions for the study of music, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music plays a key role in educating performers, scholars, composers, dancers, and music educators who influence performance and education around the globe. The 180 full-time faculty members in residence include performers, scholars, composers, and teachers of international renown. In addition, many top practitioners and scholars visit the school each year. More than 1,600 students from all 50 states as well as 56 countries study at the Jacobs School. They benefit from the intensity and focus of a conservatory setting combined with the broad academic offerings of a major research university. The Communications Office at the Jacobs School of Music is responsible for providing marketing and communication strategy and in-house full service to all performance venues, departments, and offices across the School. The office promotes student and faculty projects, news, and achievements to the media and other constituencies, supports recruitment efforts, and develops marketing campaigns for the IU Opera and Ballet Theater and other performances numbering over 1,100 per year.

Job Summary

The Graphic Designer & Web Manager is instrumental and a key player in the success of promoting the Jacobs School of Music through graphic design and website projects. Reports to the Communications Director.

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:

  • Using the Indiana University brand guidelines, serves as the graphic and web designer for major projects from conception through production; researches, strategizes, conceptualizes, proposes, and designs creative projects for electronic, print, web, and interactive media (large wall graphics, posters, emails, social media graphics, recruiting materials, signage, webpages)

  • Develops brand-approved templates for posters, emails, and other communication collateral

  • Collaborates with offices and departments across the school, university, and outside entities

  • Enforces the use of Jacobs School of Music and Indiana University brand assets and standards among the school

  • Serves as the lead for all website and web application development utilizing IU’s Enterprise WCMS (CascadeServer) and Laravel php framework. Individual needs to have interest in web technologies, strong problem-solving skills, and ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Creates and updates content on the JSoM website, providing website consultation to offices and departments across the school, and training faculty and staff on the use of the Website Content Management System (WCMS), and the Indiana University web framework.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, fine arts or a related field and two years of related experience. Experience building and updating web pages and working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Possess expert-level knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite—especially Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, and Dreamweaver. Ability to design in HTML5, CSS, and WordPress. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Able to work independently and within a team environment. Able to take initiative, independently manage time, multitask, and meet deadlines in a busy environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years of professional in-house or agency experience in graphic design for both print and digital media, videography, photography, Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Experience in art direction. Experience training and supervising others. Knowledge of XML. Creativity, resourcefulness, professional demeanor, and strong communication skills. Familiarity with music (opera, classical, jazz, etc.) and ballet.
