THIS JOB OPEN UNTIL FILLED 

The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) consists of 17 academic departments and programs, Cal Poly Arts and Spanos Theatre, and approximately 180 tenure-line faculty, 260 lecturer faculty, 70 staff, and 3,200 students in 17 undergraduate majors and 4 graduate programs. The CLA includes disciplines that represent four broad areas of knowledge: the fine and performing arts, communications, humanities, and social sciences, as well as interdisciplinary majors and minors. In addition to offering courses for its own majors, CLA offers a significant proportion of courses in general education, courses that support minors, and courses that serve as electives for all majors throughout the university. Further, the CLA plays a significant role in providing activities that enhance the cultural and intellectual environment of the campus, including exhibits and performances offered by our academic departments (e.g., Art, Music, Theatre & Dance) and Cal Poly Arts, cultural programs and lecture series offered by all of our departments, and co-curricular programs such as KCPR Radio, Mustang News, debate, and Model UN. 

Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean for Administration, this position works in collaboration as part the CLA's technical services team in support of CLA computing and technical services while ensuring excellent technical service college-wide and with particular focus on user support. This position provides direct consultative support to users to enhance their use and access of technology and information systems as well as background support via hardware and software installation, documentation, security administration, planning and coordinating application environment changes, and performing upgrades. This position also works collaboratively with faculty and staff to effectively utilize technology to support faculty research and enhance pedagogy and improve student learning in four CLA-managed computer laboratories and in multiple research spaces. 

The career level is broad and includes intermediate through senior level positions. Incumbents at this level work relatively independently and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments defined for their position. Typically, incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education, training, and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems, solving a wide range of problems and developing practicable and thorough solutions, and using effective communication and listening skills.  

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)

Bachelor's Degree and two years of relevant experience (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis)  

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills

  • Demonstrated experience with Apple Mac OS and Microsoft Windows operating systems. 
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, install, configure, diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve computer software and hardware problems associated with standard operating systems. 
  • Proficiency using standard equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, data communication, and multimedia systems. 
  • Demonstrated ability to install, configure, integrate and modify applications, networks, and other systems. 
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Windows Server, Ubuntu Server, and Apple Mac OS server platforms. 
  • Working knowledge or ability to quickly learn Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, Deploy Studio, Munki, Jamf Pro/Casper or similar systems and their uses and purposes. 
  • Working knowledge of AFP and SMB file sharing. 
  • Proficiency with common software application packages, especially word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, and on-line systems, including online calendaring and email. 
  • Working knowledge of web applications and technologies, including HTML, CSS, PHP, and Apache. 
  • Ability to learn tools for performance monitoring and issues tracking. 
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technological solutions into terms understandable by a variety of users; demonstrated ability to work with technical and non-technical staff to identify user requirements and translate them into technology-based solutions. 
  • Ability to interpret, communicate, and apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate security is maintained. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver formal and informal documentation, presentations, and training to a variety of end users. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Excellent record keeping skills. 
  • Ability to provide lead work direction. 
  • General knowledge of requirements for accessibility and other regulatory compliance. 
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems. 
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds. 
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply college and university policies and procedures. 
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality  

Preferred Qualifications / Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field. 
  • Experience with server management. 
  • Experience with scripting in Bash, Perl and/or Python. 
  • Experience with database programming using mySQL. 
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.  

Special Conditions (Staff)

  • Ability to move desktop computer systems and printers (up to 50 lbs.) and work in confined spaces if necessary to support network connections and inventory management. 
  • Must be able to adjust working hours to meet special jobs. Must be able to work additional hours or occasional holidays on an as-needed basis. 
  • May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis. 
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site. 
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). 
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. 
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. 

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
