Instructional Design Manager
The Instructional Design Manager leads the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing instructional design team (including instructional designers and instructional technologists) to produce high quality online courses and instructional assets delivered using advanced learning technologies. The manager will provide leadership in designing, developing and supporting online instruction, evaluating the effectiveness of that instruction, and planning for improvement that exploits emerging best practices and innovations
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Management and Supervision

Hire and supervise instructional designers, instructional technologists and other part-time members of the instructional design team.

Provide leadership to the instructional design team to produce pedagogically sound web-based courses by modeling effective instructional design, communicating with team members regarding required and completed tasks, outlining project plans, and providing status reports.

Build a high functioning team that is highly collaborative with other School of Nursing departments (including ITS, Academic Affairs, Student Services, academic departments) to ensure that dependent processes between departments function optimally and that the student experience in online courses is of a high quality befitting our nationally-ranked programs.

Develop instructional technologies project costs for grant and other related activities.

Monitor and manage risks to achieve goals and minimize negative impacts on course development and other instructional activities
Instructional Design and Evaluation Leadership

Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning and other members of the Academic Team to formulate support and evaluation strategies for online programs and courses.

Design production procedures to enable timely, efficient, consistent, and quality course development.

Provide educational programs designed to enhance the pedagogical expertise of faculty teaching in all programs offered by the school.

Evaluate the effectiveness of online instructional approaches used within the school’s courses, and develop plans for continuous quality improvement with faculty and the instructional team.

Provide solutions to instructional design related challenges using strong negotiation and problem solving skills

Apply Instructional Design project management best practices to lead team members through course development cycles

Produce reports regarding online courses for distribution to school and university administrators, including but not limited to course enrollments, evaluations, and schedules.

Ensure that online courses, degree programs, and the delivery of distance learning are in compliance with university, state and federal regulations, guidelines and policies.
Instructional Design

In addition to serving as the manager for the team, serve as the lead instructional design liaison for one or more academic programs within the school.

Assist faculty in selection, use, design, and evaluation of web-based instructional strategies and technology.

Use the latest tools and technologies for online course development.

Assist faculty and instructional design team to use templates as a guideline for developing courses and modules.

Working with SON Information Technology Services, provide documentation and training resources to students and faculty in the use of instructional technologies used to support online instruction.

Assist with the writing and execution of grants to support the development of online courses or modules.

Research current and upcoming technologies and delivery modalities to guide growth and relevance of the instructional design team
Minimum qualifications:

Graduate degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field.

Five years related experience. Supervisory experience required.

Experience in instructional design and development with emphasis on designing both fully online and hybrid online academic courses.

Familiarity with learning management systems (preferably Blackboard). Experience integrating technology into online instruction. Management skills and supervisory experience required.

Knowledge of adult learning theories; Record of publications and/or presentations related to instructional design, education, learning technology or other related fields; Knowledge of trends in higher education, particularly those related to online education that may have an impact on course development. Should also have membership/direct affiliation with professional associations and organizations that support future thinking around distance education.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with academic course design, project management, and Storyline strong preferred
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Requires strong oral, written and interpersonal skills and ability to deal with multiple constituencies.

Team building and diplomacy skills necessary.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
