Instructional Design Specialist

The Division of OSU Ecampus is seeking two Instructional Design Specialist’s. This is two full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed term professional faculty positions. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.

The Instructional Design Specialist is a professional faculty member who reports to the Assistant Director of Course Development and Training (CDT) – Instructional Design, within the Division of OSU Ecampus. OSU Ecampus is an innovative and creative organization with a commitment to providing nationally ranked online degrees and programs that offer access to high quality education. OSU Ecampus includes Oregon State Ecampus (online degrees), Ecampus OER(open educational resources) and the Ecampus Research Unit (which conducts original research).

The person in this position provides knowledge and creativity in enhancing the development and design of hybrid and online courses; hands-on, full-service instructional design support for faculty developing hybrid and online courses, as well as open educational resources; consulting support to maintain a future-oriented vision for development; and develops and facilitates trainings for faculty related to hybrid and online course design and facilitation.

70% – Instructional Design and Support:

• Provides ongoing instructional design and development of hybrid and online course materials that will enhance the effectiveness of Ecampus courses.

• Recommends procedures and solutions for effective hybrid and online learning and instruction.

• Provides ongoing instructional design and development of open education resources, adaptive or personalized courseware, and/or other innovative teaching methods that will support the university’s land grant mission.

• Provides ongoing instructional design support to aid the adoption of academic technologies and effective teaching strategies.

• Consults with faculty on optimal online design of curriculum and instruction and effective uses of multimedia.

• Coordinates with Ecampus multimedia developers to assure that media projects developed for hybrid and online courses are in alignment with course learning outcomes and that open education media projects are developed for the intended audience and purpose.

• Works with faculty to ensure timely completion and delivery of hybrid and online instructional design projects.

• Works with faculty to continually improve the quality of hybrid and online courses through a variety of quality improvement initiatives, including Quality Matters.

• Troubleshoots with faculty and colleagues to overcome instructional and technological challenges.

25% – Research and Training:

• Performs innovative and creative work and presents lessons learned with faculty on campus and with colleagues at professional meetings and conferences.

• As technology and software development products advance, explores and makes recommendations for multimedia software and educational technologies for faculty.

• Keeps current with research pertaining to online higher education, pedagogy, andragogy, and pertinent learning theories.

• Provides training on current research, educational technologies, and innovative teaching methods as it applies to the development and facilitation of online and hybrid courses and open learning modules.

• Contributes to the development of training materials designed to help faculty develop and facilitate high quality online and hybrid courses.

• Contributes to the facilitation of faculty and staff trainings.

5% – Professional Development and Service:

• Attends professional workshops and meetings, sharing knowledge and networking with other hybrid and online instructional design professionals. Also enhances expertise by reading appropriate professional journals and trade publications.

• Provides service to OSU and the land grant system by working on departmental, division, university, regional and national committees and projects.

• Bachelor’s degree in adult education, instructional technology, curriculum design, or related field; or, a bachelor’s degree in another field with three years of online course development or teaching experience at the college or university level.

• Experience authoring in a learning management system, for example, Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle.

• Demonstrated knowledge of developing materials using a universal design approach.

• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

• Experience interacting with diverse groups of people, especially in a professional context.

• Demonstrated ability to lead complex, time-sensitive projects to successful completion.

• Demonstrated ability to work in a customer-service oriented position.

• Demonstrated aptitude to solve problems with flexibility and creativity.

• Outstanding interpersonal, oral, electronic, and written presentation skills.

• A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity

• Master’s degree in adult education, instructional technology, curriculum design, or related field.

• Education, experience, or expertise in engineering, science, or technical disciplines.

• Significant experience in hybrid or online faculty support course development, and instructional design.

• Strong understanding of pedagogy and learning theories, specifically as applied to hybrid and online higher education.

• Demonstrable commitment to remaining informed about emerging pedagogies and learning theories.

• Experience working in higher education, especially in developing or teaching hybrid or online courses, and/or with instructional development and support.

• Familiarity with multimedia, Web 2.0 tools, social learning tools, and web design technology.
