The Instructional Design Specialist works to enhance the Miami educational experience as part of the eLearning department at Miami University. Whether a course is 1% or 100% online, this individual supports the planning, designing, and developing of effective learning experiences. This position actively collaborates with individual faculty, programs, and departments to support their digital and innovative learning needs. The Instructional Design Specialist is an integral team member of an eLearning department that is engaged in learning design, learning multimedia, learning innovation, and learning technology & support across the university. The individual in this position brings to it (or demonstrates potential to learn) knowledge of pedagogical theory & best practices that empower effective use of technology in learning.

There are three positions available.

  • Communicate and collaborate with faculty in planning courses, selecting appropriate educational technology, and course delivery strategies.

  • Apply instructional design theories, practice, and methods.

  • Create engaging and effective learning activities and compelling course content in collaboration with subject matter experts.

  • Analyze and apply trends in learning technologies and instructional design.

  • Work as part of a team that plans faculty development and supports them in effectively utilizing technology in teaching.

  • Prepare training and support resources as needed for a variety of instructional technology tools

  • Serve as a liaison to academic departments to discover and support their eLearning needs.

  • Coordinate and complete eLearning projects.

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in instructional design, education, communication, media, business, or relevant field.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with others to accomplish goals.

  • Ability to organize and pay attention to details.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience providing the knowledge/skills/abilities listed above may be substituted.

  • Position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.

  • Master’s degree (or higher).

  • Demonstrated experience in building technologically mediated courses.

  • Knowledge of and experience in education (preferably higher education).

  • Teaching experience, online, hybrid, or face-to-face.

  • Ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting.

  • Any of the desired specialties:

    • Learning Design (or Learning Experience Designer): advanced knowledge of developing fully online programs, courses, and equipping faculty; experience leading instructional design teams; advanced knowledge of hybrid teaching & learning; advanced experience in faculty development/training; project management

    • Learning Media: Advanced post-production or graphic design or other advanced media skills

    • Learning Innovation: Learning analytics or research in teaching & learning with technology; experience with innovation (in either education, business, communication, or other settings)

    • Learning Technology & Support: Advanced instructional technology use and/or support; information technology management; emerging technologies, project management, advanced LMS administration experience or user support
