WHAT WE WANT – THE ROLE

Members of the faculty team at Appleby are committed, responsible, highly motivated and academically well qualified.  Expectations for this position include;

  • Develop curriculum and course units focusing on design and technology.
  • Inspiring learning in the Design Lab where student interests collide with diverse opportunities for creative and technical learning
  • Create a learning environment that incorporate STEAM or constructionist approaches to education
  • Apply pedagogical expertise to continuously improve lab course structure and content; this may include independent and significant modification or redesign of lab material in addition to development of innovative material for new courses
  • Propose and implement improvements to the functionality and use of workshop design space
  • Provide mentoring/advisor and technical support to student’s design projects
  • Design and participate in the fabrication of lab apparatuses/ equipment
  • Responsible for planning and procurement, budget of supplies and equipment for classes, projects and new programs
  • Organizing student workshops and maintain an open schedule for drop in activities
  • Leading Co-Curricular and Club activities throughout the school to encourage expert users
  • Develop community outreach program that is beneficial to the school and its students
  • Explore and initiate process for becoming a Fab Lab.
  • Establishes and demonstrates protocols for safe and effective use of the Design Lab; monitors and maintains optional safety conditions in the lab in accordance with health and safety standards

 

 

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in either Design, Engineering, Technology or the Arts
  • Two – Four years of experience in a similar role working with students.
  • Teacher education training (B.Ed, M.Ed.) or significant teaching experience in another setting (i.e. University, College) would be considered an asset 
  • Experience with building projects using digital fabrication tools such as 3d printing, laser cutting, milling, sewing & embroidery CAD/ 2d and 3d design), code, craft, wood and electronics
  • Entry level object or text based programming skills in Scratch / Snap, Arduino, Processing
  • Experience with makerspace is required
  • Experience working and contributing to hybrid practices that incorporate STEAM or constructionist approaches to learning is preferred
  • An appreciation for tinkering (using play to come up with new ideas)
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to produce good documentation.
  • Must have excellent and demonstrable oral and written communication skills, including strong technical documentation and presentation/ facilitation skills with students
  • WHMIS training is necessary and a current First-Aid certificate would be an asset
