Position Summary

The instructional technologist consults and collaborates with faculty and team members to integrate innovative instructional technology with instructional design, media, and subject area content for classroom and blended courses. The technologist provides front line technical user support for internal and external platforms.

S/he reports to the manager of teaching and scholarly learning. The technologist assists the Learning Environments team in coordinating instructional technology integration in Rice University courses, defines future instructional technology needs for the University, and recommends effective instructional technologies for campus-wide dissemination.

  • Current knowledge of the latest software (LMS systems, like Canvas), online learning technologies and design standards

  • Ability to plan, design, develop, and evaluate engaging multimedia learning / training objects

  • Commitment to providing outstanding service and support to students, faculty, and staff

  • Strong capability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to learn new technologies quickly

  • Integration of new and existing academic technologies within the LMS environment

  • Knowledge of instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues, and best practices for classroom, online and hybrid learning

Skills Preferred
  • Working knowledge of the Canvas LMS system

  • Ability to explore, learn, and teach new technologies and pedagogical methods

  • Customer service orientation and excellent written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong knowledge of learning management systems and various classroom and online learning technologies

  • Ability to recognize and recommend necessary changes in user and / or operations procedures

Internal / External Contacts

Internal Contacts: The incumbent has frequent contact with faculty members, research staff, administrative staff, and students in all departments.

External Contacts: The incumbent has contact with vendors, peer institutions, and non-Rice students and instructors who use university systems for academic and instructional purposes.

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to respond in person and in a timely fashion to problem call in classrooms across the Rice campus several times a day

  • Must be able to lift computer equipment up to 25 lbs.

  • Must be able to handle deadline stress

Working Conditions
  • Will be required to carry a cell phone and be reachable during off hours as determined by management

  • May be required to work weekends or evenings for major project deadlines or events

  • Under general guidance assists faculty to further their instructional goals by designing, developing, testing and implementing instructional technology systems and promotes use of technology systems used for teaching and learning

  • Consults with faculty and technology specialists to enable instructional collaboration, content delivery, access to new media, and assessment. Investigating and recommending new instructional technologies

  • Integrates new and existing academic technologies to further instructional goals

  • Assesses the effectiveness of instructional technologies

  • Manages instructional technology projects

  • Creates and monitors project plans, devises project timelines and assigns responsibilities, monitors project budgets and timelines, provides project status and budget reports, anticipates and catches deviations from set plans / budgets and keeps stakeholders informed

  • Provides support, training, and documentation to faculty and students on existing learning environments including management of digital assets, multimedia, ePortfolios, and the like

  • Performs project management and documentation tasks as needed to accomplish these goals

  • Stays abreast of educational technology research and participates in academic conferences
