George Jackson Academy (GJA) is the only school of its kind in New York City: an independent, nonsectarian upper elementary and middle school for academically capable boys from lower-income and underserved families. The school was created to engage boys from 4th to 8th grade, a time when young men are particularly vulnerable to disengaging from school. Currently, GJA serves more than 120 young men of color to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Responsibilities

Duties of the job include, but are not limited to:

Manage and maintain a dynamic computer network; provide ongoing technology-support.

 

 

  • Teach our middle school technology course (developing plans and materials appropriate for the subject matter as directed by the Associate Head of School)and serve as a middle school advisor.

 

 

  • Provide leadership, hands-on management, and active service towards understanding,maintaining, and troubleshooting computers and the school’s infrastructure.

 

 

  • Communicate with parents, faculty, administrators and outside organizations for the purpose of providing administrative support, enhancing program awareness and assisting with program implementation.

 

 

  • Coordinate, design, and plan professional development for implementation of technology use in teaching, learning and school curriculum.

 

 

  • Manage technology-affiliated projects and components (e.g. online resources, instructional software, federal projects, school initiatives, etc).

 

 

  • Maintain awareness to emerging technologies and applications; in regarding “what’s new in the world of technology can be applied to our school growth.”

 

 

  • Serve as liaison to software/hardware providers.

 

  • Identify, develop and report program related assessment results to administration and faculty.

 

  • Educate GJA students, faculty, and families on technological matters and resources, when appropriate.

 

 

  • Collaborate with colleagues for administrative support and execution.

 

  • Complete required duty assignments.

 

  • Contribute proactively to a positive school culture.

 

  • Engage in professional development as suggested by the Head of School and Associate Head of School.

 

  • Exude professionalism and adheres to all George Jackson     Academy rules, regulations, and expectations.

 

  • Complete any and all expectations as delivered by the Head of School and Associate Head of School.

 

  • Comply with grant requirements; work within a budget.

 

Qualifications

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Education or equivalent; Master’s Degree preferred.  Experience with various hard and software systems, MAC and PC platforms, telecommunications systems, social media sites and applications, content management systems, applicable programming languages, and web development tools. Ability to perform basic technology-related math and calculations, review and interpret high technical information and materials, and understand complex multi-step instructions.  Excellent public speaking, communication, and organizational skills.  Ability to self-manage and communicate work matters vertically and horizontally often.  Excellent written and verbal skills; experience with children required.  Teaching certification preferred but not required.

 

Compensation and Details

Salary to commensurate with experience.
