IT Manager

The George Mason University, School of Business, invites applications for the position of IT Manager. This position ensures the supervision of the IT staff and the timely availability of electronic resources to faculty, staff, and students of the School of Business and associated programs at both the Fairfax and Arlington office and classroom locations. This is the primary person who ensures applicable access to electronic resources used by faculty, staff and students of the School of Business.

Responsibilities: 
The IT Manager has the following responsibilities:

  • Directs daily operations of the IT functions. Analyzes workflow, establishes priorities, develops standards of support and sets deadlines for responding to inquiries. Develops, maintains, and researches the resolution of technical problems to situations experienced by users of electronic resources within the School. Ensures that electronic information resources used within the School adhere to University policies for security and operate in optimal configured for performing their intended function.

  • Recruits, Hires, Trains, and Supervises two classified staff members (IT Specialists) hired to perform IT support in the School of Business. Assigns and reviews the work given to the system specialists.

  • Liaise with campus departments and/or other state agencies to consult, develop, implement, improve and/or enhance the School’s ability to develop and implement information technology policies and procedures. Consults with users, vendors, and other agents to resolve complex problems. Regularly inspects activity logs (security, system, etc.) for servers and workstations to ensure operating within intended scope. Develops and monitors baseline activity level for objects (wireless routers, workstations, servers, printers, etc.) and develops a weekly report on changes.

  • Develop and maintain a logical, reliable and tested recovery plan for electronic resources. This function is of highest security importance. Periodically test to ensure a specific plan is followed and restores intended functionality. Actively keeps informed and informs others relative to technical changes and system, software, and security developments to enhance the School’s mission. Develop and implement security guidelines that protect the electronic, physical, and intellectual capital of the School in accordance with state and federal mandates for information security guidelines.

  • Analyzes the needs of the user community and evaluates, acquires, and monitors the assets required for business processes within the School. Develops and maintains the inventory, activity, and configuration of hardware and software electronic resources. Prepares, modifies, tests or makes updates to the documentation for administering resources within the School. Conducts annual physical inventory of physical IT assets to insure retention of University/School assets.

  • Supports the ad-hoc delivery, support or training of School related services, functions and/or products managed by the IT Services. The movement, installation and configuration of workstations, printers, scanner, servers, self-contained power devices storage units, etc. may be required in order to accomplish related functions of this job.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related degree from an accredited higher education degree granting institution or equivalent;

  • Technical training or learning that enhances one’s ability in delivering or understanding current technical solutions;

  • Supervisory experience is required;

  • Experience with Active Directory, LDPA, Microsoft Windows operating systems;

  • Demonstrated experience installing and configuring applications; and

  • Demonstrated experience with supporting, administering and developing web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Industry recognized certification and licenses that enhance security, serviceability, or understanding of products used in the scope of expected work; and

  • Recent certifications from industry recognized issuing entities that indicate an understanding, application and/or experience with administering information systems in a medium to large environment.
