Job Description Summary:

The Division of Information Technology (DIT, it.gwu.edu) is the chief provider of technology infrastructure services and applications at GW. The Division partners with stakeholders across GW to equip students, staff and faculty with the technology know­how and tools necessary to achieve academic excellence. Reporting to the Director of IT Project and Portfolio Management, the IT Project Manager II, Strategic Associate works within the Division’s Planning & Strategic Initiatives department.

This senior position manages and tracks technical projects as assigned, and serves as a liaison to information technology (IT) resources. This position handles complex projects and often manages multiple efforts concurrently. This role prepares and maintains an in-progress schedule of all assigned development and implementation projects, and breaks tasks down into manageable work packages to ensure smooth project delivery. This position develops plans and schedules for projects based on priorities assigned by management and the availability of business and technical resources for the projects, and maintains issue, risk and scope change requests, as well as communication plans for projects. This position drafts and obtains consensus for project charter and project definition documents. Additional responsibilities include providing recommendations on areas for process improvement, maintaining a strong relationship with assigned business areas to include facilitation of meetings and strategy sessions, and assisting in multi-year planning and identifying technology solutions that align to business strategy and goals. This position also prepares and maintains project and portfolio management reports and associated visualizations using the university’s project and portfolio management tools.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Department Specific Duties are as follows:

  • Direct and deep experience with research strategy, administration, and solutions that enable active research and support research-related functions

  • Identify synergies across business areas for joint initiatives and opportunities in support of the needs of research campus partners, while understanding the direction of DIT and its current/future business capabilities

  • Examine client issues and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in the research-related space; this includes agile team development/delivery and authoring accompanying business cases and/or statements of work

  • Bring a strategic focus to business process management concepts and principles, including the continuous improvement of core research-related business processes.

  • Facilitate intake and resource management alignment of requests for research efforts, working closely to ensure proposed solutions align with and advance architectural objectives and identifying opportunities for use of agile methodologies.

The position is based at GW’s Virginia Science & Technology campus in Ashburn, VA but may require travel to the Foggy Bottom campus located in Washington, DC.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Possess a broad understanding of the current research technology marketplace and how those solutions support administration and active research.

  • Demonstrable experience building enterprise research-related strategies that represent the views and needs of various stakeholders.

  • A business and technical background which includes a track record of successfully leading portfolios, programs, evaluations and technology deployments desired.

  • Business process automation and re-engineering experience.

  • Consulting and/or Business Relationship Management experience in of the area of higher education beneficial.

  • Demonstrated effective solution development, communication and presentation skills.

  • Knowledge of higher education business processes is strongly preferred.
