Job Description Summary:

The Division of Information Technology (it.gwu.edu) is the chief provider of technology infrastructure, services and applications at GW. The Division partners with stakeholders across GW to equip students, staff and faculty with the technology know-how and tools necessary to achieve academic excellence. Reporting to the Director of IT Project Management, the IT Project Manager II supports the Division’s Planning & Strategic Initiatives department.

The IT Project Manager II works collaboratively with various stakeholders to document business cases and write/analyze business needs and requirements as well as effectively presents business case information to associated stakeholders. The incumbent utilizes the University’s project and portfolio management tool (currently TeamDynamix) to maintain project and portfolio information and maintains project and portfolio management reports and associated visualizations. The IT Project Manager II analyzes and summarizes project data for assigned projects and departments. Along those lines, this individual establishes performance metrics for projects, provides recommendations on areas for process improvement, as well as provides reporting and tracks process improvement results.

The IT Project Manager II liaisons with the technical/development staff to manage deliverables for the project/product and ensures consistent project management processes are followed. The incumbent prepares and maintains an in-progress schedule of all assigned development and implementation projects, breaks down tasks into manageable work packages to ensure smooth project delivery, as well as develops schedules for projects based on priorities assigned by management and the availability of business and technical resources for the projects. The IT Project Manager II maintains issue, risk, and scope change requests as well as communication plans for projects and coordinates obtaining consensus for project charter and project definition documents.

Additionally the IT Project Manager II is responsible:

  • Examining client issues and opportunities and developing business cases or statements of work for proposed solutions.

  • Facilitating intake and resource management alignment of projects for assigned areas and working closely to ensure proposed solutions align with and advance architectural objectives

  • Leveraging both waterfall and agile project management methodologies.

  • Preparing and maintaining an in­progress schedule of all assigned development and implementation projects. This includes breaking tasks down into manageable work packages to ensure smooth project delivery as well as developing plans and schedules for projects based on priorities assigned by management and the availability of business and technical resources for the projects.

  • Maintaining issue, risk, and scope change requests as well as communication plans for projects and will draft and coordinate obtaining consensus for project charter and project definition documents

  • Providing recommendations on areas for process improvement

The position is based at GW’s campus in Ashburn, VA, the University’s flagship research and technology center, strategically positioned in the Northern Virginia technology corridor. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Experience in project management

  • Knowledge of IT functionality

  • Knowledge of higher education business processes

  • Project Management certification

  • Experience utilizing agile methodologies (i.e. scrum and Kanban)

  • Demonstrated effective communication and presentation skills

  • Experience with infrastructure projects, SAAS/IAAS,Ellucian, ERPimplementations, HR system implementations, or CRMs/Salesforce desired

  • Experience with business process management and planning a plus

Typical Hiring Range $73,100 - $118,300 How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
