Maker Integrator
Reports to: Director of Digital Learning
Schedule: Year-Round Position
Start Date: As soon as possible, and by July 1, 2016
Purpose:
The Lycée Français de New York (LFNY) is in the process of designing a safe, student-centered space for STEAM-oriented learning through making, tinkering, engineering, which is accessible to Primary and Secondary students, regardless of their gender and proficiency level, and open to the LFNY community as a whole.
The LFNY Maker Space, flagship of the maker movement in the School, will open in September 2016.
The Maker Integrator will lead the incorporation of making, tinkering and engineering across the School. He/She will co-teach alongside other teachers and will work with student groups. He/She will manage and promote the dedicated Maker Space as well as other related equipment and processes. The Maker Integrator will be key in envisioning the future of making at LFNY.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Learning
Co-teaching alongside homeroom or subject teachers to integrate the ideas of making, tinkering and engineering.
Researching, developing and prototyping innovative maker space STEAM-related activities for Primary and Secondary students that may incorporate the use of instructional technology, computer-based programming or crafting, in collaboration with teachers, students, staff and outside partners.
Collaborating with the School's instructional teams to evaluate teacher and student submissions of maker-related projects, based on pedagogical value and resource needs.
Supporting student and teacher work in the Maker Space and assisting with the creation of maker portfolios and maker-related presentations.
Planning and leading maker-related extracurricular activities (after-school and possible summer/vacation camps).
Space, Equipment and Safety
Participating in the process of designing the initial space and continuing to adapt the space based on the needs of the school.
Collaborating with the Director of Digital Learning, Head of Secondary School, Head of Primary School to design and adapt the Maker Space schedule model and maintain the Maker-related calendars (space and equipment).
Collaborating with the Director of Facilities to maintain safety and emergency procedures and documentation related to the Maker Space.
Installing and maintaining equipment and collaborating with the IT Department on hardware and software needs.
Assisting in managing the Maker Space budget and submitting purchase orders.
Maintaining the equipment inventory and the availability of consumables.
Communication
Collaborating with the Communications Department to promote Maker Space activities in the School and outside.
Organizing displays of student work.
Organizing open houses in the Maker Space.
Participating, in collaboration with students and staff, in major maker-related events in the NY area.
Professional Development
Participating in maker-related Professional Development.
Organizing maker-related workshops and training for the LFNY community.
Chief Personal Characteristics:
Passionate about maker-related activities, technology and tinkering to support creative, engaged learning.
Comfortable with a hands-on approach, the use of hand tools, electronics, physical computing, open source hardware and software and desktop fabrication.
Experienced as a practitioner and mentor in the making processes who is skilled at leveraging the talents of others and solving problems.
Strong interpersonal skills; customer service oriented; able to manage several activities at the same time.
Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
Able and committed to working in a team environment.
Professional, gracious attitude at all times.
Excellent in written and spoken communication skills; fluency in French and English preferred.
Motivated for learning through professional development and certification training as required by the School and self-identified.
Certification and Experience Requirements:
3 years experience in managing Maker equipment, with a preference for experience in managing a dedicated Maker Space.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training.
Expertise in project-based learning.
STEAM-oriented teaching expertise, ideally across many age groups; knowledge of the French and American educational systems preferred.
Expertise in making, tinkering and engineering.
Experience in managing equipment budgets, purchasing, inventorying, etc.

Evenings/Weekends
Ability and willingness to participate in events outside the workday schedule.
Must be available on occasion to work evenings and weekends.
All members of the Digital Learning and IT teams must return from summer vacation the week prior to new teacher orientation (three weeks prior to students' return to class).
