Position Summary

The Engineering Outreach (EO) Technology Support Services Manager is a member of the EO management team. Responsibilities include: overseeing daily operations, management, and maintenance of all EO digital production facilities; supervising digital production staff; researching, planning, and updating Engineering Outreach digital production studios; managing and coordinating the design and construction of new facilities; leading telecommunication technology projects within the College of Engineering (COE); overseeing technical quality control for all EO digitally delivered courses; and working with faculty to plan and produce semester length courses, short courses, and special topics lectures to EO students around the world.

Responsibilities

 

Job Duty Function Manage Engineering Outreach digital production studio facilities and operations by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities

Acting as technical expert for the Engineering Outreach Department on all facilities, technological, and production matters. This includes: 

  • Representing EO and the College of Engineering on matters of new equipment evaluation, cost estimates, purchasing decisions, facilities design and implementation.

  • Evaluating new technologies and manage ‘life-cycle’ costing of technical equipment.

  • Providing technical expertise to faculty, staff, and students. 

  • Ensuring all digital production studios are fully functional and production of outreach courses is of the highest quality.

  • Working with facilities management personnel on large scale digital classroom design and implementation.

  • Developing requisitions and bid specifications for all EO technical production resources and managing the capital resources inventory of the department.

  • Providing specialized services to the COE requiring digital production expertise.

  • Managing/ leading digital technology initiatives related to the COE’s ongoing GenZ project.

  • Overseeing daily operations. 

  • Monitoring quality of work including overseeing the training and supervision of all Engineering Outreach production personnel (IT/Digital Video Analyst, Online Production Supervisor, and part time Control Room Operators).

Job Duty Function Monitor, direct, and coordinate daily production by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Overseeing technical quality control, equipment performance, recording standards and specifications, and encoding parameters to maintain high quality digital delivery.

  • Directing the production of regularly scheduled video courses which are offered on-campus, off-campus statewide, and around the world.

  • Monitoring and scheduling videoconferencing systems for connecting students and faculty both regionally and at UI branch campuses.

  • Providing expertise on digital production standards for classroom delivery of technology-enhanced classes.

  • Coordinating the scheduling and directing the production of “on location” remote video recording sessions for faculty and staff.

  • Setting standards for what faculty and students experience in the studios, what the student experiences at a distance, the quality of studio production that is captured, and the overall program quality that is uploaded to the internet for online delivery. 

  • Researching, specifying, purchasing, installing, and maintenance of all digital equipment required for online course distribution.

Job Duty Function Provide guidance, training, and direction by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Training and advising faculty, staff, and students regarding presentation structures and formats, the use of digital video recording equipment and proper techniques for studio, in-class and on-location video production, and a variety of other production related issues.

  • Providing technical expertise to faculty, staff, and students regarding video production related problems. 

  • Ensuring that instructors have the necessary resources and training to facilitate the delivery of their courses at the highest quality levels.

Job Duty Function Develop Engineering Outreach facilities by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Researching, designing, and supervising the construction of new media production facilities including all video classrooms, wiring diagrams, and equipment rack layout. 

  • Updating and remodeling current media production studios to continuously improve the technical performance of production facilities.

Position Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of telecommunications facilities and delivery technologies with at least five-years’ experience in a related field

  • Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications or closely related field

  • Designing, installing, and operating analog, digital video, and audio systems

  • Must have good supervisory experience and demonstrated managerial skills

  • Experience setting, administering, and controlling budgets

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience working with diverse groups of people including students, faculty, and staff.

  • Good knowledge of: Electronic equipment fundamentals and operation. Good understanding of all phases of digital and analog video production in studio and field locations.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ten-years’ experience in broadcast, industrial, or educational digital video studio production

  • Master’s degree in a management-related field

  • Five-years’ experience with compressed video teleconferencing systems and emerging telecommunications technologies 

  • Video capturing, editing, and file post production

  • Creating flowcharts, line drawings, and online resources for digital production equipment and facilities

  • Completing technical repairs of digital production equipment and systems

  • Designing and installing cloud videoconferencing systems

  • Experience working with faculty in production-related course design, development, and implementation

  • Experience training faculty, staff, and students, in various aspects of telecommunications delivery techniques

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Lift, carry, or otherwise move awkward objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Climb a ladder and retrieve heavy objects that are above the head.
Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as necessary.

Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
