Middle School Computer Science Faculty & Computer Skills Teacher
Summary
Our Middle School Computer Teacher is responsible for teaching computer science / computer skills classes in grades 5 through 8. This position has the privilege of on-boarding our Middle School students into our 1:1 laptop program. Our curriculum in the Middle School begins by building students' basic computing, computer management and collaboration skills, while also introducing them to productivity tools, programming and algorithmic thinking.
From there, our program builds through the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, expanding their programming abilities and tech skills to be capable, competent, responsible and facile users of technology. The solid, and developmentally appropriate, foundation in programming theory and application provide students with the understanding and ability to develop their own projects or adapt technology to their needs. They also learn that coding is can be a very creative and joyful endeavor. The digital fluency students develop in Middle School is critical to their success through their Middle and Upper School careers. This position is instrumental in getting them off to a good start and building a strong foundation.
This position will work hand-in-hand with our MS Technology Integrator and other technical staff to ensure the smooth and effective roll-out of laptops to our 5th grade each year. Likewise, this position also works with our Library and Health departments to coordinate and deliver our Digital Citizenship curriculum within the Middle School. Our goal is to instill each of our Middle School students with the skills, understanding and experience to realize their own digital visions in code, while also teaching them to be productive, capable and smart users of technology.
This full-time, ten-month position reports to the Computer Science Department Head/Director of Technology and Middle School Division Director.
Responsibilities
Teach Middle School computer classes (Grades 5-8)
Provide curricular leadership for the MS Computer Science curriculum.
Act as a Middle School co-advisor and member of multiple grade level teams
Coordinate with grade level teams to adjust the computer science curriculum, as needed, to build student skills required in other MS disciplines
Collaborate with the LS and US Technology Specialists to ensure continuity of curriculum and student skills between divisions
Requirements
Passion and professionalism
2-3 years of teaching experience (minimum)
Master's degree strongly preferred
A demonstrated ability to develop, implement and document curriculum
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively as a team player with faculty, administrators, and members of the technology team
Experience teaching Scratch and Processing as well as extending those environments to incorporate hardware (pico boards, robotics, etc.)
Experience with robotics (FIRST Lego League or other) is a significant plus
