The Network and Systems Specialist is part of the team responsible for technical support of Claremont Graduate University’s network and server infrastructure for administrative, academic (on-premise and online) and research needs. This individual assists in supporting the campus physical and virtualized server environment, wired and wireless network infrastructure as well as Microsoft cloud, and on-premise technologies, including Identity and Access Management, Management and enterprise monitoring systems. Secondary responsibilities include supporting Linux servers and related research computing technologies providing a purposeful and centralized system of services and infrastructure to support the faculty, researchers, and staff.

The regular hours for this position are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Hours may vary due to needs of the project, department or University.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Install, support, document, and maintains servers and services including various versions of Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Office 365, and VMware virtualized environment

  2. Install, support, document, monitor, and maintains network infrastructure systems including: Cisco Switches, Wireless Controllers, Access Points and Firewalls

  3. Ensures data/media recoverability by administering a system of scheduled backups and archiving operations

  4. Assists with account (de)provisioning, access and authorization management, SSO, and MFA technology administration

  5. Assists in supporting research related projects and specialized course computing activities, including administration, hardware and software support

  6. Assists with security, inventory, and product maintenance though system patching, monitoring, and management systems such as SCCM and Microsoft Intune.

  7. Performs other essential duties and tasks specific to the position and assists other IT staff members as needed.

  8. Assists in providing technology resources to faculty and researchers in various capacities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Server and network hardware and software configurations in virtualized environments.

  • Windows Server and related protocols such as Remote Desktop Protocol and File Shares.

  • Cisco device configuration.

  • Active Directory user and group maintenance.

  • Fundamental networking protocols and practices such as subnetting and DNS.

  • Multi Factor Authentication and account security principles.

  • Asset management and monitoring.

  • Office 365 cloud administration.

ABILITY TO:

  • Coordinate maintenance activities related to on premise and cloud infrastructure, including updates/upgrades, and security or other system/service level patches.

  • Demonstrate analytical and organizational skills with strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the network by monitoring system performance and configuring devices.

  • Monitor the data center hardware and equipment such as air-conditioning system, UPS, SAN, and Servers.

  • Assist in developing and implementing procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use

  • Stay current with technological developments in systems administration technology and develops ways to take advantage of new technologies.

  • Provide clear and thorough documentation outlining policies, procedures, and configurations.

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills to work with students, staff, faculty, and vendors.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to safety lift up to twenty pounds to waist level unassisted.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, and stretch.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or any combination of education, Training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

  • Two years’ experience in network and system administration.

  • Network +, Cisco Entry or Associate level Certificates, and Microsoft Server / Azure certificates preferred.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s license and meet CGU’s authorized driver requirements.

  • Successful completion of criminal background and DMV checks required for final candidate.
