Position Information

BASIC FUNCTION:      

The primary purpose of the project management role is to lead, oversee and ensure the successful delivery and management of single or multiple projects within scope, quality, time and cost constraints that may be clearly defined or may require dynamic change management in order to deliver business value.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, staff and students both within the department and University-wide. External contacts include government agencies, sponsor representatives, vendors, visitors, officials and the general public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop and manage work breakdown structure (WBS) of information technology projects.

  • Develop and/or update project plans for information technology projects including information such as project objectives, technologies, systems, information specifications, schedules, and staffing.

  • Manage project execution to ensure adherence to budget, schedule, and scope.

  • Prepare project status reports and dashboards by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.

  • Assign duties, responsibilities, and spans of authority to project personnel.

  • Coordinate recruitment or selection of project personnel.

  • Manage annual budgets for information technology projects.

  • Develop implementation plans that include analyses such as cost-benefit or return on investment (ROI).

  • Direct or coordinate activities of project personnel.

  • Establish and execute a project communication plan.

  • Identify need for initial or supplemental project resources.

  • Identify, review, or select vendors or consultants to meet project needs.

  • Liaise with various University stakeholders to capture project requirements and create project scope documentation.

  • Lead requirements definitions meetings, design sessions and other project related work sessions.

  • Initiate, review, or approve modifications to project plans.

  • Monitor or track project milestones and deliverables.

  • Negotiate with project stakeholders or suppliers to obtain resources or materials.

  • Schedule and facilitate meetings related to information technology projects.

  • Assess current or future customer needs and priorities through communicating directly with customers, conducting surveys, or other methods.

  • Confer with project personnel to identify and resolve problems.

  • Monitor the performance of project team members, providing and documenting performance feedback.

  • Perform risk assessments to develop response strategies.

  • Submit project deliverables, ensuring adherence to quality standards. 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.                       

CORE COMPETENCIES:           

  • Active PMP Certification REQUIRED

  • Familiar with project management methodologies (for example, PMI, Prince II and agile).

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a political environment and to interacting with senior leadership.

  • Knowledge of project planning tools.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; expertise in setting and managing customer expectations.

  • Distinctive blend of business, IT, financial and communication skills, as this is a highly visible position with substantial impact.

  • Effective influencing and negotiating skills in an environment where this role may not directly control resources.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, students and customers.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work with others.

  • Ability to multi-task efficiently.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:    

Bachelor's Degree and at least 3 years of demonstrated work experience as an IT project manager.  12 years of related work experience in a similar capacity may be substituted in lieu of educational qualifications.
