Responsibilities:

The New School is seeking a Senior Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO) to provide innovative vision, strategy and leadership for the coordination of technology policy and planning, and to manage information technology and systems in the academic, research and administrative functions of the University. The CIO will report to the Chief Operating Officer and draw upon her/his IT experience in the academic environment and knowledge of trends in higher education to create a unified IT strategy and delivery model across the academic and administrative units. The CIO leads a team of approximately 100 full time and 50 part time staff, manages a budget of $16 million, and works closely with the Provost’s Office on educational technologies, academic computing and online/distance learning strategies; with College Deans on technology strategy; and with senior administrative leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, guide, and oversee the University-wide strategic information technology plan in support of the overall mission and vision of The New School in New York City and globally. Drive development of a vision for University-wide IT systems and services that anticipates and incorporates trends in teaching, learning and research. 

  • Develop and implement an iterative communication strategy in support of IT.

  • Lead a service excellence-focused model of IT services and support to a community with diverse needs and expectations in a manner that enhances the University’s achievement of its teaching, research, creative and administrative mission.

  • Further strengthen an operating/governance system which manages to key metrics, incorporates student and faculty feedback into IT decisions and strategies, and reinforces a management-by-fact culture.

  • Foster an effective organization structure and team which aligns with the rest of the University, promotes effective communications among the academic community, students, administrators and IT, and results in the delivery of systems that meet the requirements of the University in a cost-effective fashion.

  • Evaluate, estimate costs and impact, and prioritize strategic initiatives, department needs and user requirements to generate an IT operational plan and budget.

  • Support the rapid expansion of University online course offerings, both for on-site students and for fully-online students.

  • Develop and maintain information technology security strategies, policies and procedures for all computing and data systems. Ensure overall compliance with regulations for securing data records consistent with current and emerging federal, state and other applicable requirements.

  • Ensure that appropriate IT risk management, disaster recovery and business continuity planning processes and regular review processes are in place and functioning.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 10-15 years of information technology management experience in a university setting in which technology is a key component of the delivery of education..

  • Experience developing an IT strategic vision in higher education or an education sector, incorporating a strong understanding of emerging technologies and a good sense of the value delivered by competing choices. 

  • Proven knowledge of advanced information technologies and successful experience implementing major IT initiatives; an understanding of the spectrum of IT activities including technology infrastructure, research computing and instructional technology, and administrative systems.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; confidence, maturity, and presence to engage effectively

  • with all constituencies; ability to naturally relate to the needs of today’s students, faculty and administration; humility, honesty, and service-orientation to build trust.

  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate broadly across the University, cultivate and sustain collegial relationships, and build unity around complex issues; an active listener, facilitator, convener, bridge-builder, and mediator.


  • Track record of outstanding management with a proven ability to lead high quality service delivery teams; ability to hire, develop, and retain talented people, define and implement effective management structures and systems, establish and uphold high performance standards, and sustain a culture defined by excellence and responsiveness.

  • Demonstrated experience taking a university to the next level of performance through the use of innovative information technology, with a focus on managing IT investments to deliver an efficient return on investment.

  • Proven governance and project management skills, with a track record of completing projects successfully on time and on budget and with broad support. 

  • Understanding of shared governance in a university setting and ability to successfully work with multiple constituencies to develop a project prioritization process.

  • Experience building and supporting online course delivery and CRM.

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of business administration, computer science or other related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • M.B.A. or other advanced degree, 

  • Experience leading a team supporting global operations.
