Overview of Position
Sonoma Academy is opening a new Fabrication Studio, which will house a variety of wood and metal shop tools, available to students to use in designated classes and on individual projects. The Shop Steward job duties will include but are not be limited to: maintaining the Fabrication Studio, ensuring all who use the Fabrication Studio (teachers, students, and other members of the Sonoma Academy community) do so in a safe manner, and work with faculty and staff to efficiently use the Fabrication Studio to support all aspects of the curriculum. This is a "hands-on" and teaching position and will require the ability to demonstrate most woodworking and metalworking tasks while instructing others to do the same. This position could potentially include teaching an academic course in the future. Approximate schedule will be Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Guild Fabrication Studio--including the makerspace, wood and metal shops--maximizing the use of the facility through efficient scheduling and support for classes and individuals 
  • Train faculty and students on safety and reset procedures; revise procedures as necessary
  • Train faculty and students on operation of tools and equipment
  • Collaborate with teachers in all disciplines to develop integrated classroom projects in fabrication, selecting appropriate tools and equipment to meet curricular objectives
  • Support (and possibly teach) exploratory and intersession courses conducted in the Fabrication Studio
  • Maintain inventory control of all tools, supplies and safety equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance and necessary repairs of tools and equipment
  • Advise on purchases of additional tools and equipment for the space

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents, including construction documents and service contracts
  • Proficient with Google Suite, Excel, and Word
  • Woodworking (required) and metalworking (preferred) experience
  • CAD/CAM experience preferred
  • Self-motivated, cooperative, personable, and empathetic to human needs
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks under fixed time constraints and deadlines
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good communication skills, whether in person, by email or on the phone
  • Comfortable seeking assistance when necessary
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training required 
  • Experience working with children ages 13-18
  • CPR/First aid certification required within the first month of employment

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects, weighing 30-50 pounds; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dusts, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes; there may be occasional contact with disease, pathogenic substances and toxic/poisonous agents
  • Ability to work at a desk and being on foot for several hours
