Sound Engineer
‘Iolani School is looking for a Sound Engineer to record, mix and edit music and audio for school performances and productions - both live and recorded.
The sound engineer would be part of the audio visual and communication departments and work closely with administrators, teachers, students, and families. The position will report directly to the Manager of Media Services and Director of Communications, while also working closely with faculty in the Performing Arts Department.
The sound engineer will set up and operate sound equipment for live events, recordings or post-productions to ensure the best acoustic result. The sound engineer should be deft around sensitive audio equipment and an expert in using them to produce quality sound, as well as knowledgeable about different audio recording and editing techniques.
Responsibilities
- Follow instructions and details, as well as provide guidance to performing arts teachers, directors, visiting performers, chaplains, administrators and other school personnel needing the support of a sound engineer
- Set up and test sound equipment before events, broadcasts or recordings
- Record, edit and mix audio tracks (instruments, vocals, pre-recorded sources, etc.)
- Enhance sound quality and add sound effects to recordings
- Work with video editors to synchronize video with audio tracks
- Playback tracks and special effects during live events
- Collaborate with lighting and camera professionals
- Create and maintain sound libraries
- Support live productions including those with musical and/or instrumental groups, vocalists, musical theatre performances, band, orchestra,
- Program and operate digital mixing boards
- Recording and editing as needed for video, assemblies, performances
- Set up and support the use of of wireless mics (i.e: resolve frequency conflicts)
- Use and troubleshooting wireless microphones (including resolving frequency conflicts)
- Provide system design for different events and performances
- Responsible for providing live audio support for: student assemblies, performing arts groups (Stage Band, Musical Theatre/Theatre, etc.), K-12 Chapel services, Lower School programs and other special events
- Design, setup, and operation of PA systems, including digital and analog mix boards
- Use of digital audio workstation software for recording and editing (i.e. such as AVID ProTools)
- Ability to collaborate with students, teachers and administrators, staff and audio visual technicians in the planning and execution of events
- Ability to support audio needs in venues such as Hawaii Theatre, Blaisdell Center, Hawaii Convention Center, Ala Moana Shopping Center, Mamiya Theatre, Paliku Theatre, etc)
- Occasional evening and weekend work
- Setup, operate and maintain audio equipment inventory
- Other office responsibilities
Requirements
- Proven experience as sound engineer
- Technical expertise in sound engineering techniques (e.g. equalization)
- Experience and working knowledge of digital audio work stations (DAW) and recording software and hardware (e.g. Pro Tools)
- A team player with excellent communication skills
- Creativity and attention to detail
- Problem-solving abilities
- Excellent hearing and manual dexterity
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience with Microsoft Office
- High school diploma; Degree in audio/sound engineering or related field
Ability to prioritize projects, meet multiple deadlines in a busy, high-energy environment.
Must be able to work some weekends and evenings.
