Systems Administrator
Department Description
Finance, Operations and Administration represents a large and diverse portfolio of services essential to the health, safety, compliance and oversight of the entire UC Davis campus. This position is one of two Senior Systems Administrators for FOA, who consult and implement complex solutions for FOA and campus wide projects and initiatives. This includes the managed infrastructure for over 1600 workstations, both PC and Mac, running a diverse set of software applications, infrastructures and protocols. Additionally, this position manages aspects of a physical and virtual server farm of approximately 300 servers.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Administrative IT Systems Architect, this position is responsible for ensuring the availability and security of mission critical infrastructures and information systems within Finance, Operations and Administration. Supported departments include multiple administrative and public safety departments, supporting systems for internal use within FOA and providing critical functions to the entire campus. Supported systems also contain highly sensitive and regulated data.
Lead and manage complex technical projects involving a broad range of systems and architectures and with campus wide impact. Conduct advanced analysis and participate in strategic planning to support highly complex IT investments. Perform advanced hardware and software platform analysis and consultation. Analyze, recommend, design and implement highly complex technical systems in support of business needs.
Provide technical leadership in managing a complex and predominantly Windows based infrastructure, including legacy systems in a highly distributed application development and data environment. Understand, manage and troubleshoot all technical layers from physical to the application layer. Advocate for and implement best practice approaches in system administration including standardization and orchestration to achieve reduced complexity and enhanced efficiency.
Develop and implement security controls and configuration standards that align with industry standards and campus security policy. Protect FOA managed systems by identifying and mitigating risks and vulnerabilities. Assure system availability by following change management practices and communicating with stakeholders for validation.
Conduct advanced performance monitoring; write highly complex orchestration scripts; and provide expert technical support to resolve highly complex issues for FOA systems.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
-
Experience leading and performing system and application administration duties in a predominantly Windows based and complex enterprise environment.

Experience and advanced knowledge of building technical infrastructures in support of business needs.

Extensive experience with Windows server operating systems, virtualization, Active Directory, networking and firewalls.

Extensive experience and knowledge of scripting languages to support orchestration of systems, applications and databases.

Experience with and knowledge of information security principles and practices as applied to systems, hardware and software.

Experience in managing technical projects including prioritization and time management.

Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with a diverse group of individuals.
Preferred:
-
Experience supporting continuous integration and release management frameworks and implementing build and deployment routines. Examples include Bamboo, Jenkins/Hudson, and Travis.

Experience with software repository management, usage, and understanding of best practices for maintaining software repositories. Specific experience with git (Bitbucket) and svn.

Experience and knowledge of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL).

BS in Computer Science or MIS or equivalent experience.

Experience with IT service management in a decentralized enterprise environment.
