Basic Function

The Technology and Reference Specialist has two primary functions: 1. Support and enhance user access to information by providing reference and instruction services 2. Provide technology support to users, including coordinating with the IT department to update, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain the library’s technology (computers, tablets, media equipment, software, printers, scanners, assistive technology, digital media studio, etc. Additional responsibilities include: contributing to the NOVA Libraries social media outreach; creating and updating research guides, manuals, and other instructional objects/ tools, collection development, circulation desk services, serves on campus/ college committees, student worker supervision, and other tasks/ projects as assigned. Reports to Technology Librarian.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support and enhance user access to information by providing reference and instruction services: Provide in person and online reference services; Teach library instruction in classroom setting and provide supplemental support as needed through research guides, tutorials, handouts, etc.;
Provide technology support to users, including coordinating with the IT department to update, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain the library’s technology (computers, tablets, media equipment, software, printers, scanners, assistive technology, digital media studio, etc.; 
Serve as point of contact for technology support in library, including the library’s digital media center. Coordinate with IT Department and Technology Librarian to keep library technology working, up to date, and user-centered. Assist the Technology Librarian in the selection and implementation of new technologies and services.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 18 graduate credit hours in library science, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 
Experience with PC, printer and other computer equipment updating, troubleshooting and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

ALA accredited masters degree in library/information science. Academic library experience. Teaching experience. Public services experience, especially providing reference and circulation services.Experience with web publishing, course content management systems, and current and emerging web technologies. Experience in training students and/ or staff in technology use. Supervisory experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Flexible self-starter and ability to work with a diverse clientele. Good knowledge of library resources, classification, and circulation services. Ability to teach information literacy and research skills. Excellent customer service skills. Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to assist people from diverse backgrounds. Strong computer aptitude and ability to troubleshoot computer and software problems.Knowledge and understanding of software, web technologies, and computer networking.Good knowledge of new and emerging technologies. Skilled in MS Office. Knowledge of graphic design, video editing and web development software. Ability to independently create and maintain web pages using standard html editors. Supervisory ability. Physical ability to reach shelves from 5’ to 80’ in height with a stool and to lift books and computer equipment up to 15 lbs.
