Technology Manager & Studio Systems Specialist
The Technology Manager & Studio Systems Specialist, under the supervision of the Director of the MAGIC Center and in concert with MAGIC Spell Studios, is responsible for realizing the vision, technical leadership and support required to achieve the academic, research and entrepreneurial mission of the studio and ensure successful facility operations.
The Technology Manager & Studio Systems Specialist will provide the day to day systems and operational support for a digital and interactive media production-based facility with 24/7 availability. Further, the Technology Manager & Studio Systems Specialist will provide primary technical support to students, affiliated faculty, staff and corporate partners. The Technology Manager & Studio Systems Specialist will be the lead architect in designing and implementing creative and technical solutions for a diverse set of needs.
Collaboration and the ability to liaise with university partners, including IT and production facility staffs from Information Technology Services, the College of Art and Design, Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, and any other relevant academic unit, is critical. The Technology Manager & Studio Systems Specialist is a member of the core MSS team.
Key Responsibilities include:

Collaborating with the MAGIC Director and the core MAGIC team to envision and design all aspects of the MAGIC technology mission. Specific responsibilities include the operational mechanisms within MAGIC (production facility, post-production facility, lab infrastructure, and workstations), as well as processes and practices to support the MAGIC core team technical activities.

Integrating, deploying, and maintaining technology infrastructure related to academic, research, experimental, entrepreneurial, partnership, and operations activities for the MAGIC film/media production stage, including electrical, grip, camera, A/V, and specialty equipment. Responsibilities are executed in collaboration with application domain staff from the College of Art and Design, Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, and any other relevant academic unit.

Integrating, deploying, and maintaining workstation hardware, peripherals, application software, and images for local and remote use to support academic, research, experimental, entrepreneurial, partnership, and operations activities within MAGIC. This includes coordinating with vendors, affiliates, and industry partners to test and evaluate upcoming technologies for use within the MAGIC facilities. Also responsible for connecting workstations to college and university level services and backups as appropriate in collaboration with IT staff from ITS, the College of Art and Design, Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, and any other relevant academic unit.

Integration, deployment, and maintenance of specialty equipment and services related to MAGIC operations. This includes media post-production technology, projection and display technology, audio technology, digital signage, IoT devices, and domain specific hardware and software related to media-centric academic and production use. Responsibilities are executed in collaboration with application domain staff from ITS, the College of Art and Design, Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, and any other relevant academic unit.
Collaborating with researchers and affiliates to realize the hardware and software needed for both funded and supported work. Responsible for balancing development and production needs with access, security, and best practices in coordination with the MAGIC Director and staff as well as campus partner domain experts. -
Supporting entrepreneurial, commercial, and event activity that occurs within MAGIC. Responsible for interfacing with external parties to determine technical needs in coordination with the MAGIC Director and staff as well as campus partner domain experts.
Supporting students engaged in academic, production, research, and entrepreneurial activity. Responsible for balancing development and production needs with access, security, and best practices in coordination with the MAGIC Director and staff as well as campus partner domain experts. -
Supervising students engaged in the technological upkeep of the MAGIC facility, including interviewing, hiring, task and project management, coordination of student workers with other units, technical coordination of activities and events, and other technical student worker functions.

Maintaining licenses and documentation with vendors, service agreements, site books, ISO records, maintenance cycles, incident reports, processes, and other relevant documentation.

Coordinating critical data and workstation image backups according to university best practices and in collaboration with ITS and College IT staffs. This includes constructing and maintaining emergency procedures guides as well as overriding access procedures in the case of a security incident, emergency, or situation where access to technical staff is lost or compromised. Also requires interface with vendors and suppliers to execute maintenance and repair agreements for covered equipment.

Acting as a liaison or participant on ITS, ISO, and other relevant College and Institute technical committees.

Special projects, reports, and other duties as assigned.

Assist Director and the Associate Director in the creation of the annual budget request and technical horizon planning.

Maintaining currency in technology and infrastructure related to the Center & University technologies services mission.

Required to participate in training and professional development opportunities related to the technical services mission.
Required Minimum Qualifications
-
Minimum 3-5 years’ experience working as a system administrator with server and workstation class systems in a production environment.

Ability to collaborate with all stakeholders to envision and implement the MAGIC technical mission in the areas of academics, research, entrepreneurship, corporate partnership, and commercial activity. This includes all aspects of design, deployment, configuration, maintenance, life cycle control, documentation, and conformance with institute, agency, and external criteria as necessary. Expected to liaise regularly with University domain experts from ITS, the College of Art and Design, Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, and any other relevant academic unit in a shared support model.

Ability to provide outstanding customer service to all Center & University faculty, staff, students, and industry partners.

Ability to collaborate with staff, affiliates, and students for requirements gathering, needs analysis, proof-of-concept testing, and production deployment of current and experimental software and hardware applications and systems.

Strong working knowledge in infrastructure related to a media production stage, including electrical, grip, camera, sound, A/V, and specialty equipment.

Strong working knowledge in Infrastructure related to computation, storage, and network services with emphasis on virtualized infrastructure, performant infrastructure for media-centric domains, and performant storage. Infrastructure skills include PoC testing and analysis, secure methodologies for setup and distribution of multi-stage development and production services, and a knowledge of commonly available systems and services for a media-based academic and production facility. Responsible for maintaining hardware maintenance service cycle, backups, security profiles, licenses and updates for all infrastructure related components. Also responsible for integrating infrastructure into university services and vendor services as appropriate.[as1]

Strong working knowledge in Linux and Windows Server production configuration and administration. Includes technologies such as Windows Server and Enterprise/Server grade Linux distributions.

Strong working knowledge in Linux, Windows, and MacOS workstation configuration, administration, maintenance, and deployment for over 300 stations.

Ability to design, configure, deploy, monitor, and tune virtualization and private cloud system related to all academic, research, and entrepreneurial functions. Must have production experience with Software Defined Storage as well as Software Defined Networking as appropriate to experience use cases.

Ability to design, configure, deploy, and monitor security profiles that balance flexibility against vulnerability and specific threats.

Ability to install and deploy private network equipment and rack-based server infrastructure co-located across multiple rooms internal to the facility, across the campus, and at satellite locations as needed.

Ability to configure, deploy, and maintain specialty systems including those related to specialty facilities (stop motion, theater, sound stage, color correction, sound mixing) and to custom hardware and software for corporate partnership and experimental implementation.

Ability to configure and deploy Active Directory systems, including use of OUs and GPOs for controlling computers and access.
