Technology Service Technician
Under direction of the Computer Field Services Supervisor, provides technical support in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of computer systems (hardware and software), peripherals, telecommunication equipment (intercom and phone), low voltage systems (bells and clocks), fire/video/security systems, and networks at various sites; provides informal training to the users in the proper operation and maintenance of computers and related equipment.

APPLICANT FILING INFORMATION: This recruitment is open to the public. An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full time, part time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list. Eligibility lists typically last for one year. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.
CURRENT OPENING: Three 12 month/40 hours per week positions. Salary placement will be on Range 32 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($24.99 per hour) of this 6-step salary range.

Essential Duties

Troubleshoots hardware and software problems identified by users and advises users of corrective measures over the telephone, in person, or via email.

Demonstrates and assists users in the operation and maintenance of office equipment and systems.

Estimates materials, labor, equipment and time required for daily computer support activities.

Inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs of computers and other peripheral devices.

Installs, supports, and maintains District owned computers, laptops, mobile devices and related equipment for staff, faculty, students and other users.

Installs and maintains office, school and classroom technology.
-
Installs, maintains, and upgrades various software on computers for staff, faculty, and students.

Picks up, delivers, and moves equipment.

Performs equipment tests using specialized equipment and a variety of data communications and network diagnostic computer programs to determine defects and malfunctions.

Orders and stores parts and supplies.

Makes recommendations to administrators and management regarding technology purchases.

Maintains and repairs fire/video/security systems, intercom systems, radio, networks, PA sound equipment, telephone equipment, point of sale devices and related audio/visual equipment.

Installs and replaces cables necessary for computer systems and networks throughout the District.

Assists with the maintenance and support of the network, including LAN, WAN, and other related network devices.

Assists in data migration and backup.

Conducts imaging and re-imaging of computers in accordance with District standards, policies and procedures.

Composes technical and non-technical materials (e.g. reports, memos, procedures, etc.) to document activities and provide written reference.

Retrieves and completes documents from automated repair order and provide updates as necessary.

Maintains a variety of records related to computer repairs, purchases and inventory.

Maintains confidentiality of all data on computers.

Attends and participates in meetings, conferences and trainings related to computer technology.

Drives a vehicle to various District sites to conduct work.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
A Coordinator of Facility Technologies coordinates and facilitates projects relating to the planning, installation, repair and maintenance of advanced technology for existing and future facility developments, and trains, supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned staff.
A Computer Field Service Supervisor coordinates and facilitates projects relating to the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of computer systems, peripheral, networks and other related technologies, and supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned staff.
A Technology Service Technician provides technical support in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of computer systems, peripherals, networks and other related technologies at various sites, and provides information training to the users.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees in this classification stand, sit, walk, push/pull, move, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (and may occasionally lift up to 75 lbs. with assistance), stoop, crawl, kneel, crouch, and bend repeatedly, reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, climb and move ladder, climb stairs, use fingers repetitively, use wrists or hands repetitively in a twisting motion or while applying pressure, use both hands simultaneously, use fingers repetitively, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, have depth perception, color vision/distinguish shades, see small details, drive a vehicle, use a computer and a telephone.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work both inside and outside, in changing temperatures, with electrical hazards, fumes, dust, odors, machinery with moving parts, moving vehicles, exposure to minor contagious illnesses (colds, flu, etc.), work in a cramped or restrictive work space, with occasional exposure to cleaning fluids, with high volume of work and constant interruptions, in direct contact with students, public and other District staff, in the absence of direct supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency
Experience:
Two years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of computer systems, peripherals, and related equipment in a network environment.
Special:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License.

Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continual insurance coverage during employment.

Use of an automobile.

Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.
