Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.

Academic Technologies provides support and administration of learning platforms, campus computer labs, the Pirate Tech student repair center, classroom technology, communications and multimedia, web application support, and central Help Desk services. As a member of Academic Technologies, Multimedia & Technology Services (MTS) provides support for the following educational technology services: clinical and proctoring recording support, telemedicine support, instructional technology consultant for the Brody School of Medicine, Brody room/AV support, videoconference scheduling and support, technology support for Laupus Library, and multimedia services.

Job Duties 

The individual in this position will serve as a second Instructional Technology Consultant for the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM). As an Instructional Technology Consultant (ITC) for the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) this position will use their creativity to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate educational technologies to facilitate instruction and learning in accordance with the BSOM’s education mission. Develops new educational material, works with faculty to update existing educational materials, design solutions, and ensures such solutions are accurate and timely. Applies knowledge of instructional design principles and practices to produce learning deliverables.

This position will research current technological trends in education, assess needed improvements, and develop strategies to correct technology deficiencies. Based on performed research and the needs of the faculty and students, this position will develop instructional materials. Once the instructional materials/technologies are implemented, it is the responsibility of this position to evaluate its progress and make any necessary changes. This position will also provide consultation, support and expertise in the development and implementation of strategies and processes, along with the necessary evaluation and assessment of technical and operational effectiveness of the various programs and processes and recommend/implement those changes that are needed to better meet the needs of the medical students and of the Brody School of Medicine and its academic departments and degree programs. Provides leadership in the use of these technologies in support of the BSOM curricula. Collaborates with other ITCS teams and other departments on campus to discuss planning, coordination, and implementation of new technologies.

Provides professional level educational technology support for academic, clinical, and administrative faculty. Implements and trains on new educational software, hardware, and AV peripheral equipment used in the classrooms. Evaluates new hardware and software requested by teaching faculty. Support includes maintaining current knowledge of complex hardware/software technology and the configuration of various computing components. Provides training and support for educational technologies. This includes working with faculty to create, organize, and manage courses in Blackboard and providing the teaching faculty with one-on-one and workshop training.

Manages BSOM academic projects, advises on the organization and presentation of course materials, supports the creation and presentation of multimedia components, and teaches instructional media creation and design. Must be able to make creative proposals for course design, supervise projects, and carry through from design to course delivery. Gathers input from BSOM teaching faculty for new technologies.

This individual will work closely with the Office of Medical Education personnel to suggest and implement new course designs and technology for the classrooms. Will also serve on the curriculum committees and will provide faculty/staff and administrators with information regarding changes in the current educational technologies such as, new equipment/software, upgrades, etc.

This position may require non-business hour support including evening and weekends, depending on the needs of the university.

Minimum Education/Experience

Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration, Networking Technology, or related area and one year of experience in the information technology field related to the position’s role; or Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year experience in the information technology field related to the position’s role; or Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, math or engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in computer science or other information technology related field is preferred. A Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology is essential. At least two years of experience providing educational technology support in an educational setting is essential.

This position should have an advanced-level knowledge of instructional technology concepts and designs. This includes but is not limited to, knowledge of the latest techniques, technologies, and methods to facilitate learning, including social, mobile, and on-demand learning. This position should also have advanced technical skills including an in-depth working knowledge of all MS Windows operating systems, computer hardware and software, audiovisual hardware, software, and peripheral equipment used in the classroom. The person in this position must have extensive hardware and software knowledge to maintain a high level of classroom technology support and training for BSOM faculty and the ability to coordinate with faculty to provide advanced user support for ongoing classes. The person in this position will take an active role supporting faculty and students in the use of educational technologies, including Blackboard, Mediasite, TurningPoint, and other integrated solutions. This position will be responsible for consulting, developing instructional materials, resolving technical issues, and providing face to face and online training classes. This individual must have excellent presentation skills.

This individual should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work as an independent, productive, responsible, self-motivated member of a team in high-pressure situations. This position involves a great deal of public contact in serving as the primary point of contact for classroom issues and demands a high standard of customer service; so, this individual should have excellent customer service experience. It is critical that this position possess excellent organization skills and extraordinary attention to detail.
