The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. The Division anticipates students’ developmental needs throughout their collegiate experiences and promotes students development by fostering a community of learning, which encourages individual student involvement and participation. Moreover, the division seeks to contribute to the development of the whole individual by fostering in each student a deeper appreciation of the importance of life-long learning, individual responsibility, and human diversity. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.

Job Duties 

Student Accessibility and Assistive Technology Specialist is part of a team that provides cross-functional support for customers of Student Affairs Office of Technology Services. A primary focus of this position is to provide technical support for Disability Support Services (DSS) and assistive technologies for student accommodations.

Position will:

  • Coordinate accommodations for students with disabilities that involve assistive technology.

  • Oversee technical aspects of student accommodation processes for alternative media, video captioning and exam testing.

  • Support DSS hardware, software and applications used to manage departmental services.

  • Maintain inventory of assistive equipment and technology, including software. Ensure all equipment and technology is current and updated in a timely fashion.

  • Troubleshoot assistive technology installations and implementations.

  • Provide assistive technology education/training – individually and in workshops for the university.

  • Actively participate in professional networks to ensure continued learning about relevant laws.

  • Identify, review, and assess current trends in assistive technologies used in higher education.

  • Establish priorities and make recommendations for DSS’ yearly assistive technology budget.

  • Function as a consultant and act as a liaison with faculty and the university departments.

  • Assess and document student needs for assistive technology for success in academic courses, research activities and examinations.

  • Provide computer training for students with disabilities in conjunction with the use of assistive technology as requested.

  • Evaluate ADA/508 compliance for academic courses, campus programs and services for students registered with Disability Support Services.

  • Serve on campus-wide accessibility committees.

  • Provide consultation, management and support for all technologies and information systems in departments under the Associate VC of the Dean of Students. This includes the Center of Counseling and Student Development, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Dean of Students and Student Health (secondary support).

Minimum Education/Experience 

Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
