Experience in a higher education, research-oriented IT environment (or similar) is strongly preferred. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead and bring greater coherence to the technology-related activities of this complex and dynamic, computing- and data-intensive organization. - This individual will provide vision and senior leadership for the development, coordination, and use of technology to enable essential innovation in research, learning, and public service. Considerable experience working within complex organizational settings in relevant technology areas, as well as providing strategic and innovative thinking is desirable. The candidate should also have demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of new delivery models balancing central and distributed services. - The ideal candidate has a proven ability to mobilize resources, foster innovation, and leverage core infrastructure services for research, learning and service. The individual must be a team builder with demonstrated success in developing and nurturing collaborative relationships and providing direction to senior leaders across the institution. Position Summary: |
The Vice Provost - Information Technology/Chief Information Officer (VP-IT/CIO) leads the campus effort in developing and furthering the overall IT strategic plan. The CIO works with central administration, college deans and information officers, and faculty, staff, and students through governance groups. The CIO receives support from central resources to facilitate emerging technologies and support collaborative activities that support the strategic planning process. The CIO will manage the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), our central IT organization. DoIT has approximately $100 million operating budget with more than 600 full-time staff and 200 student staff. DoIT provides core IT infrastructure services to campus, develops and implements applications (including major administrative applications for both UW-Madison and for the UW-System), plays a major role in managing the state-wide higher education network and is instrumental in the facilitation of BOREAS (the regional optical network), and the northern tier network consortium. As measured by staffing, about 1/3 of campus IT is within the DoIT organization and will report to the CIO (through the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for DoIT). Thus approximately 2/3 of UW-Madison's IT support is located outside of the central IT organization. Providing close collaboration among and between all IT groups is an important part of the VP-CIO. UW-Madison is one of the top public universities and is consistently among the most prolific research universities in the world, with a reputation for excellence built on more than 150 years of operation. The university is set in Madison, Wisconsin, a city often cited as one of the nation's best places to live. We are one of the first land-grant universities and, as the state's flagship university, are fully comprehensive, with 120 departments and over 200 education and research centers distributed across 13 schools and colleges. UW-Madison has a massive IT infrastructure serving administrative, education, research, and outreach needs with distributed facilities that produce millions of CPU hours of computing cycles each year and provide for huge amounts of data storage, retrieval, transmission, and analysis.
