George Walton Academy (GWA) is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory school serving students from pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade. GWA is located in Monroe, Georgia, which is 45 miles (1 hour) east of Atlanta and 25 miles (30 min.) west of Athens. Established in 1969, GWA sits on 61 landscaped, wooded acres. GWA graduates approximately 75 students each year and 100% receive at least one college acceptance by graduation. GWA prepares students not just for college but to become contributing citizens in a global society by promoting intellectual, physical, artistic, and ethical excellence. Not affiliated with any particular denomination, GWA believes in Judeo-Christian values while respecting the heritage and beliefs of others.

 

GWA seeks an engaging, innovative Media Specialist who values interaction and collaboration with students, faculty and staff. Successful candidates will demonstrate experience and skill in:

  • Continuously curating and maintaining a rich and relevant collection of materials and tools that help foster students’ love of reading and appreciation of literacy. 

  • Assisting students and faculty with usage of media center equipment and digital resources.

  • Collaborating with teachers on incorporation of media center resources within units of study.

  • Integrating technology and information literacy skills.

  • Promoting appropriate and ethical use of information, including adherence to fair use, copyright, and use of intellectual property.

  • Assisting students and staff in developing research skills.

  • Advocating for the media center as an integral component of the Academy’s learning community.

  • Networking with other media centers, libraries and resource providers, as well as maintaining membership in state and national library associations.

  • Developing systems for selection, circulation, and deaccession of media center materials.

  • Managing a budget and ensuring good stewardship of designated funds.

  • Planning and executing special events or outreach efforts.

  • Aligning the media center’s priorities, materials and activities with the George Walton Academy mission

  • Engaging in professional development opportunities to remain informed and current on trends and best practices.

  • Providing a safe and inclusive environment where students are inspired to explore, discover and collaborate.

Additional Requirements:

Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree and prior experience as a Media Specialist or Librarian in an independent school. Experience in leading media or library classes, as well as design and development of curriculum, is a plus.

The Media Specialist will also be a member of GWA’s advisory team. Advisors meet regularly with a small group of students, both individually and collectively, to build meaningful relationships that foster communication, guidance and support.

All faculty and staff are expected to be active and engaged members of the GWA community by attending school events, serving on committees, and communicating effectively, promptly and supportively.
