The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia, seeks an Assistant Director of Web Design & Development who is responsible for Batten-branded websites serving the external and internal needs of the School. This role will enhance the reputation of the Batten School, promote its brand, and develop creative content across multiple platforms.
The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Information Technology and play a critical role as technical developer & design lead with the Director of Communication and entire communications team. The incumbent will work with Batten School leadership, marketers, analysts, admins, writers, video producers, and photographers to create a dynamic rich experience for visitors of our websites. This role is responsible for innovative and strategic use of web platforms to showcase rich media and creative content of the Batten School. The incumbent partners with stakeholders throughout the School to identify goals, set measurable objectives, gather requirements and implement the vision into digital reality. The Assistant Director plays a role in leveraging the School's holistic digital footprint within the context of Batten's overall marketing and communications positioning strategy, including paid digital advertising, social media and email communications.
A Bachelor's Degree is required, a Master's degree is preferred. At least 5 years of website management including hands-on, front end web development and graphic design is required. Two years of experience managing a CMS such as Drupal or WordPress including templating and custom modifications are essential. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are required as is the ability to be a collaborative team player and contribute creative ideas in a team setting. The ability to facilitate the entire web development process end¬to¬end, including design, development and deployment of visual enhancements, features and functionality is required. Strong understanding of UX/UI principles as well as responsive and adaptive design is essential. The ability to produce wire¬frames, and establish guiding website architecture/navigation, labels, and nomenclatures is imperative. Knowledge of effective design and development techniques based upon data analysis, SEO, and directed campaigns is essential. Demonstrated project management skills, and the ability to oversee multiple high¬level projects simultaneously is required. Mastery with CMS architecture such as a WordPress or Drupal along with HTML5/XHTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and Adobe Creative Suite is required.
Applicants with previous professional work experience in a creative or digital agency setting with working knowledge of templating for email marketing platforms (e.g. MyEmma or Salesforce marketing cloud), email design and best practices are highly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with experience with Headless or Decoupled architecture or willingness to utilize this architecture. A strong understanding of global perspectives and a willingness to learn new skills and adapt is highly desired.
