SUPERVISOR: Director of Digital Scholarship, Critical Making, and Digital Collections Management

JOB SUMMARY: The Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian works as part of the new Digital Scholarship, Critical Making, and Digital Collections team within Library & Information Technology Services (LITS) and with Tri-College Library Consortium colleagues (which includes Haverford and Swarthmore College Libraries) to grow our digital collections program and support digital collections infrastructure and practices. The Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian is responsible for providing expertise and leadership in development, implementation, and assessment of digital collections and metadata systems, policies, and procedures to support discovery, access, management, and preservation of Bryn Mawr and Tri-College collections. The position plays a key role in supporting the implementation, administration, and enhancement of Islandora, the newly selected platform to host and preserve Tri-Co digital assets. Working with the team Director, the position will help to build infrastructure in support of a number of History of the College projects that engage students, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i in telling diverse stories grounded in materials from the College Archives. The position will apply expertise in cataloging and metadata standards in order to create original and copy cataloging for diverse content types.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement, support, and plan enhancements to our ecosystem of shared digital asset management platforms and services.

  • Partner with faculty in using digital collections and resources in their research and teaching activities.

  • Develop programs and documentation for educating faculty, staff, and students about digital technologies processes, including the preservation of both personal and institutional digital records.

  • Direct, train, and review the work of student assistants, including providing mentorship as part of the Digital Competencies Program.

  • Regularly evaluate metadata schemas, elements, and their implementations, recommending linked data strategies, where appropriate, to ensure Bryn Mawr and the Tri-Co are following effective practices for optimal discoverability of LITS collections.

  • With Tri-Co and LITS colleagues, lead and coordinate the development of metadata policies including description, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for physical, electronic, and digital collections.

  • Perform batch loads of MARC and other electronic records as needed.

  • Apply programming and/or scripting skills in support of technical requirements and production needs for metadata creation, conversion, enhancement, normalization, and maintenance.

  • Revise and oversee digitization and metadata creation workflows.

  • Perform occasional original and copy cataloguing of print and electronic records.

  • Represent Bryn Mawr College Libraries on Tri-College committees and at meetings of professional library associations and other scholarly organizations.

  • Contribute to metadata creation in partnership with cataloguing colleagues and through the oversight of student employees.

  • Provide ongoing support for primary administrators of existing digital asset management platforms, including EmbARK Collections Manager and ArchivesSpace.

  • Coordinate with vendors on relevant digitization and migration projects and in support of digital collection and preservation services and infrastructures.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or Master’s degree in a relevant subject area with experience working with collection management and preservation software, metadata, databases, and digital collections.

  • At least two years’ experience working with digital asset management, digital repository, and/or digital library systems, such as Islandora, CONTENTdm, or DSpace.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for metadata, including AACR2/RDA, MARC, LCC, LCSH, MarcEdit, and Linked Open Data.

  • Familiarity with digital preservation frameworks and best practices and experience with digital preservation tools, such as Archive-It.

  • Project management skills and ability to balance and prioritize competing work and time commitments.

  • Ability to work independently and to initiate necessary work procedures according to guidelines set by the supervisor.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collegially and effectively with a diverse population of colleagues, faculty, and students.

  • Ability to facilitate decision-making in a complex organizational environment.

  • Excellent technical problem-solving skills.

  • Familiarity with APIs and linked data principles and standards.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
