Associate Instructional Designer
Job Summary |
This position is an entry-level position and works under the guidance of IU faculty and eDS staff (instructional designers, instructional technologists, and instructional developers) and serves as an online course consultant and information and resource person for the design and development of online courses across the IU system. Supports multiple project teams on a variety of course design issues, including identifying student learning outcomes, fostering active and engaged learning, proposing or implementing appropriate instructional technologies, and assessing student experience. Participates in the development of project planning and implementation as requested. Knowledgeable about and keeps current with the instructional design literature and other areas of expertise. Works with the eDS instructional designers and Principal Instructional Designer to implement practices, procedures, and workflows in conformance with university and UITS strategic and operational plans; the intention is to provide design and development assistance and direct support to faculty and programs creating and conducting online courses. Works closely with established cross-unit or cross-division teams led by eDS staff, and in cooperation with the teaching centers and libraries on all IU campuses and other UITS units in the support of programs and faculty pursuing the creation of online courses. The emphasis for all activities is on the use of evidence-based best practices and innovative approaching to engaging and effective online learning. eDS may hire multiple positions across the two main campuses. Position will work both face-to-face and remotely with eDS staff and faculty clients across multiple campuses. Tasks may include: Propose or implement recommendations regarding course design, technology, and instruction delivery options. Assist in defining instructional, learning, or performance objectives. Develop instructional materials and products for technology-based redesign of courses. Design or propose learning activities and supports for use in online courses. Interview subject matter experts or conduct other research to develop instructional content. Design and/or produce instructional aids for stand-alone or instructor-led classroom or online use. Conduct needs assessments and strategic learning assessments to inform the basis for curriculum development or to update curricula. Assess effectiveness and efficiency of instruction according to ease of instructional technology use and student learning, knowledge transfer, and satisfaction. Support development of instructional materials, such as lesson plans, handouts, etc. |

Required Qualifications |
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in related field and one year of recent relevant experience in instruction, training, teaching, or instructional design, working and consulting with faculty or other subject matter experts, and experience with some online instructional technology (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, html, or Canvas, etc.). Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated abilities in instructional design and understanding of recent instructional design related literature. From both pedagogical and technical perspectives, demonstrate a thorough understanding of best practices for the design and teaching of online courses. Knowledge of educational theories and their application to instructional design. Familiarity with methods, approaches, and existing and emerging technologies for supporting faculty in the design, development, and delivery of online learning in higher education. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide variety of individuals. Excellent organization and presentation skills. Must be self-directed and able to juggle competing priorities with short deadlines. |
Preferred Qualifications |
Experience with online learning environments and emerging technologies; experience teaching or support at the college/university level. |
