Academic Technology Specialist

Within the Office of the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, the Academic Technology Specialist for Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS) works to support and integrate technology into the teaching and learning activities in SIS programs.  Stanford Introductory Studies is seeking an Academic Technology Specialist who can facilitate the integration of appropriate technology to meet the pedagogical needs of instructors and students. . The Academic Technology Specialist will evaluate the effectiveness of current uses of learning technologies and assist in advancing their incorporation into the classroom and assignment design.  

• The Introductory Seminars program offers 230+ seminars for first- and second-year students each year. https://undergrad.stanford.edu/programs/introsems

• Sophomore College offers ~20 intensive seminar courses each year for returning sophomores during the first three weeks of September. 

• Thinking Matters, 20+ required first-year courses that develop critical thinking and other transferable academic and personal skills as a foundation for liberal education at Stanford, including the Education for Self-Fashioning program.

• Arts Intensive offers students the unique opportunity to explore their creativity in small courses outside of the pressures of the regular academic year.  The courses take place during the first three weeks of September. 

• Evaluate the multimedia, online, and educational technology needs for instructors and/or students, and provide or coordinate solutions. 

• Provide assistance in the direct integration of appropriate academic technology into course curricula, assignment design, extra-curricular or co-curricular learning.

• Develop relationships with service providers, particularly the learning management system team (Canvas), to advocate needs and obtain resources for faculty and students.

• Participate in the development of resources, seminars, courses, or workshops to disseminate information about uses of technology for academic staff, faculty, and students.

• Recommend purchase and use of software, hardware, and multimedia equipment; manage distribution of tech equipment to SIS instructors. Maintain an inventory of departmentally shared equipment.  

• Assess training needs; develop and deliver workshops and user-friendly documentation, especially in supervising tech coordinators for Thinking Matters courses.

• Participate in or lead projects to develop innovative uses of technology for student learning, and/or community building.

• Engage in initiatives to encourage faculty and/or students to adopt the use of appropriate computer technologies in their teaching, learning, co-curricular activities, or research, especially through program websites.

• Stay informed about academic educational technology developments through lists, publications, and conferences.
