Gann Academy seeks candidates for a full-time position for the 2019-2020 academic year teaching engineering and/or design classes, collaborating on the management of our newly-constructed Prototyping, Fabrication, and Robotics Labs, and working with students and faculty to use those spaces and integrate their use into existing curriculum. Successful candidates will have a passion for the teaching of the designer/engineer mindset, a strong background in classroom teaching and pedagogy, experience in designing and building curriculum and programs in collaboration with colleagues, and a commitment to collaborating, reflecting, and growing in their teaching practice. Personal qualities such as creativity, curiosity, perseverance, flexibility, versatility, and resilience are desirable, as is a willingness to tackle new challenges with an open mind and to work collaboratively with students and faculty alike.

Primary responsibilities for this position will include the ability to:

  • Teach 3-4 sections of engineering and design electives. Specific courses will depend on the candidate’s areas of expertise and joy in balance with the other members of the CD&F department.

  • Collaborate with other CD&F faculty on the design and refinement of existing curriculum around engineering, design and computer science.

  • Collaborate with other CD&F faculty on the oversight and maintenance of the Prototyping, Fabrication and Robotics Labs.

  • Act as a guide and coach for students and faculty, encouraging, inspiring, and supporting them in the exploration of using student “making” within their existing learning and curricula, and the purposeful use of our innovation spaces.

  • Enthusiastically champion successes of students and faculty in these endeavors and help promote these programs both inside the program and in the wider Gann community.

A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required, a master’s degree is preferred. In addition a minimum of three years teaching experience and strong organizational skills, the successful applicant will also have the following:

 In regard to engineering and design teaching:

  • Strong engineering and/or design experience, including expertise in the engineering-design cycle, design thinking, prototyping and fabrication.

  • Experience teaching engineering and/or design to a wide range of learners with varying experience.

  • In regard to the Prototyping, Fabrication, and Robotics Labs:

  • Knowledge of design thinking and project-based learning (PBL) principles and experience applying these practices to teaching and learning.

  • A strong background in CAD software of varying levels from TinkerCAD to SolidWorks.

  • Familiarity with using and maintaining the equipment typically found in innovation labs, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machinery, etc.
