For over 150 years, NDNU has served students not traditionally represented in higher education. NDNU is both a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian-American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), and we enroll a significant number of first-generation college students. We are continuing the legacy of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur by educating on behalf of peace and justice, honoring the dignity of each person, embracing diversity, and building community while being committed to community engagement. 

Through funding from the US Department of Education’s Developing HSI Program (Title V) grant STARS (Success in Transfer and Retention for Students), NDNU will be expanding its online course offerings to include undergraduate general education courses to support student retention and graduation. The Instructional Designer will work collaboratively with school administrators and faculty members to design, develop and deliver effective teaching and learning experiences through the integration of instructional design, pedagogical theory, and educational technologies.

In partnership with faculty members, the Instructional Designer will manage the course design and development of a number of courses each semester. Day to day responsibilities will include:; Partnering with faculty charged with delivering online courses to develop learning objectives, ensuring alignment between program and course outcomes and assessment; Designing engaging learning content and activities; Overseeing the production and integration of multimedia course content; Providing guidance on online instruction; and Reviewing courses against NDNU quality and compliance standards.

Specific Responsibilities / Duties:
Course Design and Development

  • Partner with faculty to develop course learning objectives, ensure alignment between program and course outcomes and assessment, and design engaging learning content and activities leveraging research-based instructional design and pedagogical principles.

  • Utilize diverse influencing styles to persuade faculty in the value of using best practices.

  • Work with Assistant Provost for Online Programs, Deans, and Academic Unit Leaders to establish course quality and design standards for courses in a program.

  • Refine and maintain University standards for online learning pedagogy, educational technologies, instructional design procedures, regulatory requirements, and faculty and staff training and support in the course development process.

Instructional Design

  • Act as a liaison to faculty working on grant-related projects, providing a suite of instructional design services including 1:1 consultations, workshops and course design support in instructional design, pedagogical theory and online, hybrid and technology-enhanced teaching.

  • Design, develop and publish training materials, self-help guides, blog post and other resources for faculty.

  • Stay current on instructional design, online, hybrid and technology-enhanced course development models and educational technology trends and issues.

Qualifications:
Education

  • Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in Teaching, Instructional Design and Technology, Curriculum Development or related field.

Experience

  • 3+ years experience in developing online, hybrid and technology-enhanced learning experiences and courses.

  • 1+ years working with faculty on course development.

  • Experience teaching in K-12 or Higher Education; Online or hybrid teaching experience a plus.

  • Experience using a learning management system and other educational technologies to support online learning. Moodle LMS experience, and familiarity with the California Community College’s OEI course design rubric preferred 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate pedagogy, andragogy, and instructional design principles for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced learning.

  • Proficiency in developing engaging online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced learning activities and content.

  • Proficiency in the use of LMS functionality, reporting, and course management; Knowledge of the Moodle LMS a plus.

  • Proficiency in utilizing industry-leading learning technologies and content Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and familiarity with WCAG 2.0 guidelines and law governing Universities with regards to accessibility.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to manage projects in a highly organized fashion with a high attention to detail.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and dispassionately accept constructive feedback.

Note: Relocation is not required for this position. The instructional designer may work remotely.
