STEAM Teacher Coordinator
West Sound Academy (WSA) is a college preparatory International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for grades 6-12 with an approximate enrollment of 120 students. WSA is located on a rural 20-acre campus in Poulsbo, Washington just a 30 minute ferry ride from Seattle. West Sound Academy is a college preparatory school that graduates accomplished, creative, intellectually curious young adults prepared to contribute responsibly to the world.
The ideal candidate would hold an advanced degree in mathematics, science or computer science, would be interested in developing curriculum that integrates STEAM curriculum principles including robotics, maker space, computer programming and computer aided design. The ideal candidate would have at least 2-3 years of appropriate teaching experience. Essential qualities include the ability to develop a healthy rapport with students age 13-18 and the energy to manage the demands of curriculum planning, teaching, and parent communications.
This teacher will join a faculty and administration of 20 and reports to the Head of School. The student to teacher ratio at WSA is 8:1, with typical class size ranging from 8 to 21. WSA uses a rotating block schedule.
Duties outlined below reflect 1.07 FTE. Teacher Coordinators are expected to work four days per week for five weeks of summer break for an 11-month contract paid over 12 months.
Duties
Instruction
- Develop and teach two one-semseter STEAM electives (one each in Fall and Spring) with an emphasis on fostering curiosity using project-based learning and student-led inquiry

Teach one after school subject specific technology class open to the community
- Develop and implement a three-week June Term course of focused study based on the teacher’s interests and experience

Serve as advisor for upper school students meeting once per week and acting as a primary point of contact for parents

Coach the Robotics Team

Teach one to two classes in math or science as needed
Supervision

Proctor and manage the technology required for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Facilitate after school “maker space” open sessions once per week

Manage the care and maintenance of the Technology Access Center equipment including 3-D printer, CNC mill, laser cutter, vinyl cutter and various tools

Assist with the overnight fall retreat (1 night)

Assist the IB Biology teacher with student ten-hour projects and Integrated Science extended research labs for two weeks twice per year
Ancillary Duties

Provide information technology assistance to the Director of Technology

Collaborate with other faculty within the Math, Science, Arts and Humanities departments

Attend department and faculty meetings and evening events as requested

Experience Required/Preferred
Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in a related field. Candidates must have 2-3 years experience teaching at the middle or high school level. The ideal candidate would have experience with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and be flexible, a team-player and willing to step in as needs arise.
