Design Technology Teacher

Carrollwood Day School is a non-sectarian, co-educational, independent day school serving students from preschool through high school. Founded as a preschool in 1981, Carrollwood Day School (CDS) has an enrollment of over 1000 students from 3-years-old through 12th grade and is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, the first school in Florida and sixth in the United States to be authorized to offer PYP, MYP and DP IB Programmes. CDS has finished the construction of the second phase of its master plan. This phase includes the construction of a new gymnasium and athletic fields on its Bearss Avenue campus. Beyond a rigorous academic environment, CDS students are actively involved in interscholastic athletics, the visual and performing arts, community service and a wide variety of extracurricular activities that enhance their overall educational experience.

Position Description

Carrollwood Day School (CDS) seeks a dedicated and experienced Middle School Design Technology/STEEM teacher. CDS is an International Baccalaureate, non-sectarian independent day school serving students from three-years-old through high school. CDS stands out as a leader in its mission to educate the whole child, with a concentration in character education.

Responsibilities will include teaching a well-developed and required 8^th grade IB MYP Design Technology course focused on the Design Cycle and the Gateway program, which is part of Project Lead the Way (PLTW). The Middle Years Programme (MYP) design technology aims to develop internationally minded people whose enhanced understanding of design and the technological world can facilitate our shared guardianship of the planet and create a better world. Inquiry and problem solving are at the heart of the subject. Middle Years Programme design technology requires the use of the design cycle as a tool, which provides the methodology used to structure the inquiry and analysis of problems, the development of feasible solutions, and the testing and evaluation of the solution. Middle Years Programme design technology achieves a high level of design literacy by enabling students to develop critical-thinking and design skills, which they can apply in a practical context.

Our new team member will be trained to teach Project Lead the Way (PLTW)designed for middle school students, a program called Gateway. We will begin implementing this program with a unit called Design and Modeling, which will introduce students to isometric/orthographic drawing and CAD with SketchUp. Any experience with PLTW and/or in this content area is preferred.

A Design Technology teacher should expect to work together with our Elementary, Middle School, and High School innovation and technology teachers to implement an engaging, innovative, and linear curriculum that builds over time and is developmentally appropriate to our division, including areas such as coding, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Experience with a wide variety of technological devices is a must. Experience with VEX IQ Robotics, engineering, and coding (JavaScript & RobotC) is preferred. Our expectation is that this teacher will utilize our 1:1 program, our 3D printers and our laser printer to inspire and challenge students to be innovative in their use of technology. The ideal candidate will include socially relevant and international themes in their curriculum. Strong classroom management skills, effective communication skills, and the enthusiasm to pioneer a full Innovation program as a team player is a must.

Competitive candidates should demonstrate an understanding of and affinity for middle school students and show an ability to work with students who vary in ability and learning styles. This teacher should also expect to lead a group of up to 15 students through our character education program as their advisor and act as their parents’ liaison to the school. They should also demonstrate support of student life by being willing to lead clubs or organizations and participate in extracurricular school activities.

Essential Duties

1. Teaches 6 sections of Design Technology, ensuring taught content and skills align with the expectations of a rich, college prep curriculum and the expectations of the IB MYP program.

2. In collaboration with Department Chair, IB Coordinators, and colleagues, adapts material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments and unit & lesson plans that guide and challenge students.

3. Evaluates academic and social growth of students, writes comments, prepares report cards, keeps appropriate records, and utilizes Schoology, our school LMS, to communicate consistently and well with students and families throughout the year.

4. Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.

5. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment and enforces those standards with consistency and respect.

6. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff, such as the learning specialist or guidance counselor, in assessing and helping students solve learning, health and attitude problems.

7. Communicate with parents and school administration and counselors on student progress.

8. Supervises students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day, such as lunch duty and car-line

9. Serves as a faculty advisor to a group of 10-15 students within the established advisory & social-emotional learning (SEL) program at CDS.

10. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities, occasionally including off-campus field trips and class trips.

11. Administers and reports assessment in accordance with division practices.

12. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities

Other Duties

• Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.

• Participates in various student and parent activities, which occur in school including Open Houses, student clubs and after-school activities.

• Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Must possess a Bachelor’s in their field, preferably a Master’s degree in field and/or education. At least 4 years experience in a secondary classroom preferred. Experience with IB and PLTW preferred. Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
