Description:

East Carolina University’s Joyner Library is seeking a collaborative, innovative, and creative leader to serve as the Head of Library Technology Services (LTS) department. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Discovery and Technology Services, the Head of LTS supervises a team of programmers and technology professionals which supports the digitization, web, hardware, and software application development needs of ECU Libraries.

Library Technology Services combines the IT Operations team, responsible for the hardware and server support and security in the library, and the Application and Digital Services team, responsible for implementing open source solutions, developing custom applications, and digitization.

The Head will manage the staff in the department (currently 8 people). The department provides website and development support for both Joyner Library and Laupus Health Science Library and the head will facilitate good communication between the department and both libraries. Ability to communicate library needs to the team and tech needs to the library is critical. Key skills in the position will be effective communication and decision making, project management, and the ability to work with stakeholders to maintain and improve tools and interfaces. The successful candidate will provide leadership and vision for the LTS department, set priorities ensuring departmental goals are met, and facilitate professional growth of the members of the department.

LTS assures access to East Carolina University Libraries’ unique digital collections and repositories. The head will consult with internal and external partners, such as campus IT and faculty, on library technology support of online exhibitions and digital scholarship projects; additionally, they will assist in improving the access, discovery, usability, and preservation of ECU’s scholarship and digital collections. Finalists will be asked to give a brief presentation during the campus visit.

Requirements

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science or an alternative relevant advanced degree, such as a master’s in computer science, information systems, or technology systems;

  • Managerial/supervisory experience.

  • Knowledge of project management methodologies, principles and practices;

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver successful products/solutions;

  • Proven expertise with current technologies, platforms, and products that support library information technology;

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to effectively interact with audiences of diverse backgrounds.

  • Experience working in an academic library, with additional preference for supervision of technology services staff

  • Experience with open-source community software development (such as DSpace, Blacklight, OJS or Omeka);

  • Knowledge of database management principles and software;

  • Experience with digital projects in an academic institution;

  • Working knowledge of one or more scripting and/or programming languages (e.g. Ruby, Java, .NET, or PHP), web design frameworks (e.g. HTML, CSS, XSLT) and/or server administration;

  • Experience with user experience and accessibility.
