Director of Making & Doing
New Position: Director of Making & Doing, Kleberg IDEA Center
Start: July 2016
Upland Country Day School is seeking a creative, motivated self-starter to serve as the first Director of Making & Doing at The Kleberg IDEA Center on campus. The IDEA (Innovation, Discovery, Engineering & Arts) Center is currently under construction and scheduled to open in September 2016. The defining characteristics of the center are open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, collaborative problem solving and deep engagement opportunities for students in all grades at the school.
The Director will report to the Lower and Upper School Heads and will work closely with the faculty to support classroom study and enhance learning at each grade and bring the excitement and understanding of the goals of the center to students and faculty by fostering and facilitating creative, participatory ways to learn.
Specific Responsibilities:
Strategize, develop and deliver innovative programs that support each grade’s curriculum utilizing the Center and its tools and materials
Manage Center, maintain budgets, schedule, inventory, and supplies
Oversee the implementation and growth of the IDEA Center dedicated to the participatory processes of students’ making, tinkering and exploring IDEA content through hands-on approaches
Collaborate with UCDS faculty and outside partners to create IDEA-related programming and develop the center as a community resource for IDEA learning.
Research and develop innovative IDEA activities and maintain all center materials, tools and equipment
Develop after-school programs and clubs to foster excitement and understanding of the IDEA Center
Education and Experience
Passion and knowledge about the use of technologies to support creative, engaged learning. Experience developing innovative and novel content for informal settings
An effective collaborator, coordinator, team builder and mentor experienced with leveraging the talents of others and collaborative problem solving.
Comfortable with a hands on approach, particularly an ability to improvise with audiences of varied ages the use of hand and power tools, electronics, computer software, hardware and various other technologies.
Bachelor's degree in science, education, instructional technology, educational technology, computer science, and/or a related degree.
Teaching experience in physics, computer science, engineering, robotics and/or electronics.
