Job Description
The Director of Technology reports to the Head of School and CFOO and is responsible for the operation of academic and information technology in line with the mission, vision and operational objectives of the School. The Director of Technology plans, coordinates, directs, and designs all operational activities of the Technology department, as well as provides direction and support for all faculty and staff at Redwood Day. The Director of Technology works closely with decision makers in other departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the school’s functions.

Essential Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or experience in Information Technology, Educational Technology, or Computer Science required, Master’s degree preferred

  •  3-5+ years of experience leading a school IT department or department in technology related field

  • Demonstrated ability to apply information technology in solving business problems

  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology hardware, software, and related web-based or other tools, information technology, systems management, as well as network development and management

  • Demonstrated success working with faculty in all disciplines to identify instructional needs to enable/enhance student learning

  • Familiar with relational databases and client-server concepts

  • Experience with Blackbaud Education Management Solutions and JAMF

  • Experience with Google Admin Console and Google Apps for Education

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills with equally strong presentation skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels in the organization

  • Strong working technical knowledge and experience with maintenance, administration and implementation of multiple operating system and server platforms

  • Familiarity with applicable laws and regulations as they relate to information and technology issues

  • Effective negotiation and vendor management skills

  • Strong supervisory, organizational, technical, and analytical skills

  • Ability to coach, develop and mentor staff

  • Willingness to be very hands-on in the day-to-day operations of the technology department

  • Physical requirements - this position requires occasional lifting of objects up to 30lbs

Essential Job Functions
Leadership

  • Develops a strategic and long-range technology plan for the school, regularly updates the plan with input from the Technology Department team members

  • Provides leadership, vision, and day-to-day management of the technology department, including data network and backup systems, firewall and security issues, databases, servers, printers, telephone systems, overhead paging, bell system and other related areas

  • Coordinates the identification of, and plans for, future technology needs

  •  Collaborates with the Technology Integration Specialist, Division Directors and Head of School on specific needs and growth opportunities to spearhead technology initiatives that support teaching and learning across the grades

  • Serves as the lead technology liaison to the Division Directors, non-academic Directors, and administrative teams

  • Remains current on new developments in the areas of software, hardware, networks, telecommunications, training, and maintenance

  • Networks with local, regional, and national technology associations Supervision

  • Supervises the technology team including the Technology Integration Specialist and Systems Administrator and conducts annual performance reviews

  • Sets a vision for the technology department, motivating team members to contribute to the success of the team and the School

  • Provides mentorship to team members to help them grow professionally

Management

  • Member of the Technology Committee and collaborates to create technology policy, anticipate planning needs, monitor and review technology plans, future needs, long-term strategies, proposals, etc.

  • Develops and maintains the department budget, including technology capital expenses

  • Coordinates the evaluation, purchase, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, and support of all hardware and software based on departmental needs, including managing inventory and determining best use of retired equipment

  • Collaborates with the Technology Integration Specialist to evaluate existing hardware and software, recommend new programs, configure software, and budget accordingly

  • Provide technical assistance and training regarding device usage, software applications, and the general instructional use of technology in the classroom and non-academic related departments

  • Collaborates with the Systems Administrator to support and troubleshoot problems relating to hardware and software

  • In partnership with the Technology Integration Specialist, promotes the use of technology to support classroom learning and optimize student achievement 

Network Duties

  • Oversees and reviews the systems and network architecture of the school in collaboration with the Systems Administrator

  • Monitors all student and staff network privileges

  • Ensures the coordination, security, and efficiency of network infrastructure

  • Problem-solves any faults with the network and other technology hardware and software

  • Develops and maintains the school’s databases and internal and external networks

Other Duties

  • Develops, coordinates, and teaches workshops and classes on instructional and administrative applications of various technologies

  • Manages vendor relations, procurement, installation, and implementation of information systems and hardware

  • Manages and maintains the School’s Student Information System/ Learning Management System

  • Collaborates with the Systems Administrator to manage and maintain the Google Workspace, including maillists and groups

  • Assists with ERB test coordination and deployment

  • Assists with AV equipment set-up for School assemblies and events

  • Provides backup support for the Help Desk when necessary to meet demand

  • Actively pursues relevant professional development

Schedule and Hours
This is a full-time, exempt position. Standard hours are 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM Monday – Friday.
